Bush Defends Use of Prewar Intel on Iraq

Wednesday July 9, 2003 11:49 AM

By TOM RAUM

Associated Press Writer

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) - President Bush on Wednesday defended his use of prewar intelligence on Iraq, saying he is ``absolutely confident'' in his actions despite the discovery that one claim he made about Saddam Hussein's weapons pursuits was based on false information.

Democrats have argued that the White House's acknowledgment that Bush misspoke earlier this year when he said Saddam tried to buy uranium in Africa justifies a broad review of how the administration used prewar intelligence on Iraq.

Bush, at a news conference here with South African President Thabo Mbeki during a five-nation African tour, took on his critics.

``There's no doubt in my mind that when it's all said and done the facts will show the world the truth,'' he said. ``There's going to be, you know, a lot of attempts to try to rewrite history, and I can understand that. But I'm absolutely confident in the decision I made.''

4. Funny, I've also been thinking about parallels to Tricky Dick.
They are not only astounding, as you say, they are alarming. Remember the huge margin by which he was re-elected in 1972 - despite everything re Vietnam, Watergate, etc.

8. I don't think he will be elected for the first time
he was appointed.

He will not make it to November and if he does, in many ways he is Adams all over again... as well as tricky dick....

There is no way he can dig himself out of this one... have hope, I can hope and will enjoy the tricky Dick speech... the ball is now firmly rolling also Watergate had less of a lead time and... Watergate had another problem, lack of Internet.

This boy will be brought down by US, the People, not by the Press.

Smile, you and I have played a role.

6. Don't let AP off the hook, either
"he is ``absolutely confident'' in his actions despite the discovery that one claim he made about Saddam Hussein's weapons pursuits was based on false information." (emphasis added -- JHB)

That claim was hardly the only one based on "false information".

13. whitewash
>>Oh, the irony!

agreed, like the attempt to completely whitewash the history the US had with Iraq in order to distance, demonize and make war.

An inquiry is crucial.

as if it were yesterday? I heard part of the interview on CNBC at the crack of dawn this A. M., and he was just babbling nonsense...

20. Good
The defense of the lie simply repeats the lie, and gives it further circulation. No one gives a damn whether there is any "doubt" in this jackanapes' mind: he is clearly impervious to the stuff, and that will be his downfall.

What there is, and can be, no doubt about, is that this reptile told a deliberate lie, knowing it was a lie when he uttered the lie, and that the facts of the matter clearly show it was a lie, and him a damnable liar.
