WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama interviewed federal judge Diane Wood of Chicago on Tuesday for an opening on the Supreme Court, the fourth candidate known to have had face-to-face talks with the president, a person familiar with the conversation told The Associated Press.

Wood met with Obama in the Oval Office and also interviewed separately with Vice President Joe Biden. The source familiar with those sessions spoke on condition of anonymity to protect the privacy of Obama's deliberations.

The president appears to be homing in on a decision. He has done sit-down interviews in recent days with at least three other finalists: Solicitor General Elena Kagan and federal appeals court judges Merrick Garland, who serves in the District of Columbia, and Sidney Thomas, who is based in Montana.

Tuesday also marked 25 days since Justice John Paul Stevens announced his plans to retire from the court this summer. By comparison, that is exactly the period of time Obama took last year in evaluating candidates before nominating Sonia Sotomayor to succeed Justice David Souter, who also retired.

A 60 year old male appointee would be a bad choice for the same reason.

And that reason is - Opie Roberts is going to be the most fucking ridiculously unqualified "Chief Justice" of the Supreme Court for decades, and his sidekick Sammy the Fish will be there right along with him. We need some Justices on that court who can hold out that long. Counting on someone who's 60 now to last 30 years or more isn't all that likely.

There have been quite a few articles around lately regarding that there will be no Protestant on the Court after Stevens retires.

And I agree with the others up above that Wood is too old.
The strategy needs to be to pick someone 55 years old or younger ;)

Priorities people... Even if her time is brief, it could be very productive.. Personally I will defer judgment until I've seen what she's done. If it's all good, then let's enjoy the time we have, instead of lamenting what we might not..

19. I think I'd like her more than candidates like Kagan and Garland

Yes she's older, but lifestyle means a lot. You see many kinds of life expectancy gaps narrow if you can live a healthy lifestyle, plus add years. More important than age is if she can balance out this RW court.

someone like Whoopi Goldberg. A real bleeding heart in-your-face fucking super liberal. One who would tell Roberts, Scalito, and Thomas to kiss her ass.

if she could help create majorities (persuade Kennedy) for the next 20 years thats more important. Thats probably expecting too much though.

Even with her age I don't see anyone much better, on his short list. Kagan is younger and has potential to be a leader but I don't trust her on the 1st Amend (free speech).
