Bridge owners threaten new suit against Canada
Source: The Canadian Press

OTTAWA—The company that runs the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor says it will sue Canada — again.

The news comes a day after Ottawa offered a $550-million loan to Michigan to kick-start construction of a new bridge.

Detroit International Bridge Co. says it will file a lawsuit under NAFTA claiming Canada is trying to undermine it by coercing Michigan into building a new, competing span.

The company has another NAFTA suit under way, which claims that construction of a Windsor approach road steers traffic away from its bridge.

2. That's just absurd
Then again, NAFTA was designed to create such absurdities.

3. That would be interesting if it turned out NAFTA could be used to prevent competition.

....awwww, well ain't that tough shit....compete baby, compete....

....Canada should inform the Detroit International Bridge Company and Washington that's a sovereign nation and that NAFTA notwithstanding, it's not going to honor any stinkin' lawsuit from the Detroit International Bridge Company....

8. Canada's a sovereign nation?
Canada is still ruled by a monarchy, and it's head of state is appointed by the Queen of England.

9. Wrong on both counts
We are not "ruled" by the Queen. She "reigns" as a sort of benevolent overseer. She has NO powers to interfere in government decisions.

And the Governor General is appointed by the Prime Minister.

11. Please stop talking until you actually know what you're talking about
I probably have more of a say in what happens in this country than Elizabeth does.

6. Privatitizing public infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc.) is STUPID. Screw them
Besides, constructing a new bridge, besides offering competition for that monopoly, might just put a few people to work.

10. In Texas, they seize homes for football stadiums.
But somehow, the govt can't seize this bridge for the public good.
