Arizona Governor Signs Controversial Immigration Bill

FOXNews.com

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed a controversial bill that seeks to crack down on illegal immigration.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed a controversial bill that seeks to crack down on illegal immigration.

The sweeping measure will make it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally. It will also require local police officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are in the country illegally.

Earlier, President Obama called the bill "misguided" and said it could violate people's civil rights. The bill's Republican sponsor, state Rep. Russell Pearce of Mesa, said Obama and other critics of the bill were "against law enforcement, our citizens and the rule of law."

6. I almost understand her frustration - nothing has been done to secure our
borders despited repeated requests from border States, and with the drug cartel killings seeping over onto US soil, something has to be done to protect the people.

I just disagree with this bill -- regardless of the intent, it IS racial profiling.

The Federal Government is the one to point the finger to here, for letting it get to this point.

I'm encouraged to hear Obama essentially say the same thing, the Gov has to do something, this particular action is 'misguided'.

How do other countries protect their borders?

I watched the UK debate and the same topic was brought up. There is confusion about this subject everywhere. Unfortunately there is no simple solution - and reasonable debate gets drowned out by the extremes.

I don't know what I'd do if I were in a border State, especially with the escalating violence crossing over the boundary. It's a tough one, that's for sure.

They have them already with lights and rooms built inside as well.

I live in Arizona and illegal immigration is not the cause for most of the violence. They account for less than 10% (based on what I read in The Arizona Republic) of crime. It's citizens accounting for the vast majority crime here.

This is a huge problem and not just in border states.

How many other countries in the world are expected to take in anyone who sneaks across the border and treat them as citizens?

Why is it that every other country has a "right" to enforce their borders and their laws but we're supposed to turn a blind eye?

16. And what about...
SO...now that the Goose-Steppers can stop anyone they want...well, of course it will only be people with brown skin...are they going to begin a statewide search, top to bottom?

And then what?

Are they going to cuff parents and leave the American born children alone in the home? WHO is going to take care of their children?

And, they say that they have about 450,000 that are in the state illegally (guess that number is in reference to "them thar Mexy-cans" and doesn't include anyone from any OTHER country, there illegally)...are they going to CLEAR the state of all of them? How long will that take? WHO is going to pay for that?

I can hardly wait to see the thousands of American WHITE people that will line up for jobs. Ya know...gardening...nanny...slaughter houses...digging ditches...etc. All for minimum wage and NO benefits of any kind. I'm sure that there will be THOUSANDS just begging for all of those jobs.

I hope my "snark" is evident. There are morons running that state and they are REPUBLICANS.

22. Boycotting is not a good idea
Yeah, Boycotting AZ; that makes no sense. You are all for penalizing the people who live and work here; the very people you are saying are going to be effected by this Bill. The people who need to have the jobs that come from Tourism and Conventions. This Bill was not given to the people to vote on; it was created by the State Congress and then given to the Governor to sign. I don't agree with the bill at all, but boycotting a state that had no say in the outcome of it is a little extreme (just like the people who you are mad at).

40. Yes, in fact I did

I got a list of local businesses and professionals who contributed to the yes on 8 campaign and I stopped doing business with them.

I used the same list to create a new list of businesses and professionals to patronize who contributed to the no on 8 campaign.

Why would I boycott TV and movies? They tend to be left of center.

51. You were talking about Boycotting all AZ
The whole state, not just the people you put the Bill into effect. I thought you would apply it the same way to CA. Since, you know, the whole state got a chance to vote on their Bill, and decided that Gays do not have a right to marry.
TV and Movies are made mostly in CA, or have their offices there. Why not "punish" them by Boycotting them?
Sorry. we are getting off tangent here, and I don't want to get this issue too far off subject.
I have issues with the Bill. It is way over the top and all it will do is allow Sheriff Joe Arpio more power that he will continue to abuse. The issue I have with your statement is punishing the people who live in the state with a boycott. All it does is hurt the people who reside here, not the lawmakers. Same thing goes for Sanctions. The only people they hurt are the regular people, not the ones who make policy.

54. Since I don't live in AZ, boycotting the state makes sense

I live in CA so boycotting the state isn't feasible or practical, that's why I boycotted businesses who supported prop 8.

I don't have a reason to travel to AZ, and now I won't go out of my way to find one.

If businesses don't want to be boycotted, they will need to find a way of giving people a reason not to.

If 29% of AZ residents are Latino, and 70% of AZ residents support this bill, either only 1% of white Arizonans are open-minded, or there are a lot of self-hating Latinos around.

52. You're thinking about government the wrong way
"This Bill was not given to the people to vote on; it was created by the State Congress and then given to the Governor to sign."

The government isn't some far-off cabal. We're a democracy. WE are our government. The people of AZ selected these representatives and governor. If these representatives and governor screw up, it's ultimately the people's failure.

Reagan was very successful at convincing people that the government was someone else, doing things to them. Conservatives have beat the hell out of that drum for 30 years now. The reality is the government is us, and we are doing it to ourselves.

Will a boycott hurt the people of AZ? Yep. That's the point - the goal is to hurt the people in charge, not their servants.

If they don't get quick and very strong retribution, other states will follow. This stuff is a creeping cancer and it is a very slippery slope.

Other states need to know that the consequences will be devastating for enacting laws that require American citizens to carry papers or risk going to jail for the crime of living while Hispanic. I have family members who are Hispanic who are born and raised in this country. One of them did 4 tours in Iraq on the front lines. No one should ever ask her for her papers.

This needs to be nipped in the bud and nipped in the bud hard.

Then AZ and the US government need to get real and enforce the laws on employers who hire those in the country illegal in order to pay cheap wages and avoid taxes.

65. While the law may be azz-backwards the law calls for one to provide
proof of citizenship when asked by a law enforcement officer if said law enforcement officer has "reasonable suspicion" that one is in this country illegally. If citizenship papers are provided then the law does not call for all hispanics to be deported. Additionally, AZ cannot deport anyone. How it generally works is local law enforcement turns illegal immigrants over to ICE and they deport the person.

The law is jacked up enough as it is - no need to exaggerate what it does.

The law will be abused before November and Hispanics will come out in force.

I'll bet voter registration drives in Hispanic neighborhoods see a big increase by September.

47. I agree.
It is the only silver lining that I can see. Arizona is about 29% Latino.

67. Is that all? 35% of Texas is Hispanic. And we're an effin' red state.
I know that in the 08 election, we tottered on the edge of being purple, but those damn gerrymandering Rethugs are hitting us hard by trying to re-align our districts. The only thing we Hispanics have got going for us is that we're screwing like bunnies and out populating them right now. But, a population of 29% isn't going to make much of a dent unless they really pick up and surge. Surging is a problem for us. Especially among the youth in poor areas. In 2000, my kids had textbooks that taught them about what a great leader Saddam Hussein was and how he was bringing Iraq into greatness and prosperity. No, Arizona isn't getting rid of anything. If it was, they would have gotten rid of that asswipe sheriff.

94. About 1/3 of Hispanics voted for McCain...
in the last election. If that number can be reduced by bills like this, Texas becoming blue in 2012 is highly likely. But, for all I know a majority of Hispanic citizens were for this bill? The Republicans have been actively courting the Hispanic vote for some time now.

109. 29% is a big chunk of the population.
It is big enough to sway an election IF people get out and vote.

Latinos could have an even bigger influence here in Texas with our even larger Latino population. Getting folks out to vote has been a challenge, but I think that this new law in Arizona will help to motivate more voters. We are within reach this year to replace Perry! Bill White is only 4 points away in the latest poll. :)

36. BOOOO!!!!! No excuses for racial profiling should EVER be in law
The American way does NOT allow for a police state structure just to weed out the non-citizens. Check just the brown people: that's racial profiling. Check everyone equally: that's Orwellian. So what IS a non-racist, politically correct (uh-oh, right-wing talking point?) way of finding illegal immigrants without compromising civil liberties?

A reasonable court should toss this. It's state law over-reaching its authority. On "All Things Considered" I heard the governor complaining that the federal government wasn't doing enough about immigration. I agree with her with that somehow.

We had plans for Arizona for upcoming summer – after your legislature and governor have made it clear that Latinos/Hispanics will be required to carry papers to keep from being deported, we have changed our plans. No vacation with friends (we’ve convinced them to go elsewhere as well), no monetary tourist support to your state. We vote with our feet. All of the major issues confronting our cities, our schools, and our unemployed Americans, and you want to bring out the worst policies possible toward hard working folks. Even police departments don’t want this bill! What can your legislators be thinking?

104. rather than boycott, wouldn't it be 'fun' to do a protest inspired by the bill?
show up in the 'wrong' clothes, shoes, etc. Speaking any language besides English in public, looking confused by signs in stores and on the street- and when asked for our Papers, don't have any. refuse to produce, get arrested, then produce proof of citizenship-

might be a huge waste of money and time, but it would make a point about how stupid it is to profile. i am white, but have a foreign sounding name- should i be stopped?

"THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

--------"First they came ..." is a famous statement attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller
