Obama: U.S. 'a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws'

President Obama said today the United States "must remain a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws," and that includes fixing the nation's broken immigration system.

Obama also blasted a proposed new law in Arizona that would make it a crime for migrants to be in the state without documents; the president said failure to act responsibly at the federal will lead to irresponsibility elsewhere, and he used the Arizona proposal as an example.

Senate Democrats and Republicans are working on a compromise immigrant bill, and Obama said he would try and assist those efforts. He called for "comprehensive immigration reform," which includes tighter security at the border as well as a path to citizenship for 11 million Americans.


Obama spoke after the swearing-in of two dozen new Americans, all of them members of the armed services. He congratulated them for renewing "the spirit of possibility" and "the very essence of the country we all love."

2. Well he is definately wrong about the "Nation of Laws" remark. If we were a

nation of laws, then the Bush Administration would be under investigation and possibly in jail by this time. So to me thats a very hypocritical statement.

Obama doesn't get to say that this is a nation of laws.

--shielding Bush & Co. from prosecution for 8 years of criminal activity
--shielding torturers from prosecution
--"preventative" detention without trial
--extra-judicial killing of US citizens
--retroactive immunity for big-shot corporate law breakers

Most people, if they had done what Obama has done, wouldn't be shooting off their mouths about this being a nation of laws. They'd be slinking off into the shadows and keeping their mouths shut. But not him... not him.
