Americans show preference for U.S.-made cars, poll finds
BY ALAN FRAM

WASHINGTON -- America's love affair with the automobile has a new spark -- a renewed affection for U.S.-made cars after a long dalliance with foreign automakers.

Slightly more Americans now say the U.S. makes better-quality vehicles than Asia does, with 38% saying U.S. cars are best and 33% naming autos made by Asian countries, according to an Associated Press-GfK Poll.

The survey suggests those numbers are largely fueled by a plunge in Toyota's reputation and an upsurge in Ford's. The poll was conducted in March, as Toyota was being roiled by nightmarish publicity over its recall of more than 8 million vehicles around the globe and allegations that it responded sluggishly to safety concerns.

Though the U.S. advantage is modest, it marks a significant turnabout for American automakers battered by recession and relentless competition from foreign manufacturers.

1. If I had money to invest, I'd buy shares in American car makers, mostly Ford and GM,
but even Chrysler. I'd also buy shares in Nissan.

2. I'm thinking about it because I drive an American car for work. But the shocks
are so much better on my Acura. As my back problems get worst with age (and weight)the shocks are very important to me. I notice at work since we have a variety of American cars (I think they are Ford escorts) of different ages and mileage that the new ones feel great but the ones that are a few years old have terrible shocks. Have they improved on this yet? I would love to buy American cars. We live in an area where there is lots of snow, ice, gravel roads and roads in poor condition.

4. The shocks? Those aren't specific to car make. You can get good shocks for any vehicle.

5. Shocks are a part that must regularly replaced, like an oil filter...

7. Thanks for the article. Maybe I should check to see if work has replaced them at all.

3. Good. Now bring All the manufacturing back into the U.S.
This should have been a requirement of the bailout.

6. I'm sure you drive a Hyundai as a protest of CAW GM plants in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

8. I would buy
a Toyota in a heartbeat. We have two, Sienna van and Tacoma and love both. Also have a 12yo Ford Escort. All three vehicles have over 100,000 with only routine maintenance. Love my Toyota, 4th one we've had over the years...Corolla, Tercel SR5 Wagon, Sienna and a Tacoma. Next time I'll probably buy a Prius.
