Obama tells Sen. Boxer supporters to step up
Source: MSNBC

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is telling California Democrats that their liberal Sen. Barbara Boxer might lose her re-election race unless they work hard for her campaign.

Obama delivered the stern warning Monday evening in Los Angeles at the first of a trio of fundraisers for Boxer and the Democratic Party.

Boxer is seeking a fourth term and has won big in the past in Democratic-friendly California. But she's facing a more difficult political environment this time around because of the shaky economy.

Sorry Senator Boxer, but I'm not going to give my time and energy to someone who doesn't respect my right as an adult to smoke cannabis. I'll vote for her, but all my donations and volunteer work are going to NORML and the Legalization Proposition this year.

1. Put down the bong
You'd rather smoke joints than help a good Democrat get elected? Says a lot about you.

4. A good Democrat is someone who supports personal rights.
That's the PRIMARY reason I support the Democrats, and call myself a progressive. If a Democratic politician isn't going to live up to those ideals, then why shouldn't I cut out the middleman and just support the personal rights issue directly?

It would be the same if the issue were marriage equality, and I'm straight.

2. What is the fair market value of Fox News' 24/7 anti-Democrat propaganda?
I think Californian Democrats will step up, but California has had a Republican governor for 23 out of the past 27 years, so California is not nearly as liberal the media likes to portray. Finally, you know that Fox News will be giving Carly Fiorina hours upon hours of free press.

6. Boxer is obviously better than Fiorinia
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 10:09 PM by harry_pothead
which is why I'm voting for her. But for me to give my time and money, there has to be something more than "better than the other guy/gal." There has to be something that draws me to that candidate uniquely - and opposing the repeal of cannabis prohibition does the opposite for me.

9. Boxer Is More Than Merely The "Other Gal"
Barbara Boxer is one of the most liberal voices in the U.S. Senate. If she loses, it is a two fold loss. Not only do the Republicans gain a seat, but we lose a liberal voice in an institution that tilts heavily to the right.

7. Really? He's The President and A Democrat. This Is Democratic Underground.
I assume you are posting on a Democratic website because you tend to support Democrats...

Zilch?

With that type of cynicism and distrust, are you are a Democrat? Tea Partiers have entire rallies filled with people who think that Democratic politicians are full of it, and can't be trusted.

8. Ben Nelson's also a Democrat.
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 10:16 PM by harry_pothead
Let's cheer for him too. He has a D by his name.

EDIT - I can also understand why a gay American would ignore the words of a man (Obama) who thinks that he should not be able to marry the one he loves.

10. So, Then Why Post On DU, Since You Dislike Most Democrats?
I get it, you hate all Democrats by virtue of association. Ben Nelson is a Democrat. All Democrats are like Ben Nelson. I think the logic is flawed, but you are the one coming up with reasons to be apathetic and ineffectual. So, you are going to blame Ben Nelson for doing nothing?

The Right Wingers get their ass kicked in 2008, and they come back aided in no small part by the right wing media. In contrast, some "liberals," look for reasons to stay home, because some Democrat who is from another state hurt their feelings.

Please.

11. No, I was pointing out that being a democrat doesn't automatically...
...entitle a a politician to my time and energy. I am passionate about certain issues, mainly those concerning personal rights - such as marriage equality, cannabis legalization, reproductive rights, sexual rights, free expression, etc. My support for politicians directly relates to their willingness to stand for these things.

If Boxer came out in support for legalization, then I would split my time and energy between her campaign and the legalization initiative. But she came out against. Therefore, the best way to advance personal rights in this election is to spend my time on the legalization initiative.

14. Reread my comment.
I'm well aware that Fiorina doesn't support cannabis rights either. I also said that Boxer is a far better candidate and that I'm voting for her.

What I was talking about was my VOLUNTEER TIME and DONATION DOLLARS - which I think is only fair to allocate to the legalization initiative given both candidates' stances on the issue.

Besides, the whole "well the GOP is worse" attitude is what gets progressives walked all over time and again.

17. Each vote is yours, so I"m not sure what the problem is.
If you want to send a republican to the Senate from California,
than perhaps Pot is harmful to one's brain after all.

18. I'll work for dems when they work for us!
I'll support Boxer because she is one of the few democrats I am happy to vote for. But I am not happy with the democrats or Obama and I certainly don't want to see cap ad trade done away with just to support big oil special interests.

This is a warning Obama. Stop selling us out like you did on health care. We will not 'work' for more of the same. We want REAL change.
