Two more recalls for troubled Toyota (275,000 vehicles)

Toyota Canada, trying to recover from a series of embarrassing recalls, announced two more Friday night, including one of the biggest notices for a safety defect in the company's history.

In what has become a public-relations nightmare, the company announced a voluntary recall of about 270,000 Sienna minivans in Canada to check for corrosion in the holding assemblies of spare tires that could cause them to fall off and trigger accidents.

Snip: The company announced a second recall about 35 minutes later involving removal of "tray type" floor mats sold as an option to owners of almost 4,774 Tundra truck and Highlander sport utility vehicles. If improperly secured, the mat could cause the accelerator pedal to malfunction, the company said.

The notices mark the sixth and seventh Toyota recalls involving a total of more than one million vehicles in Canada in five months. Previous recalls have involved inspections, changes and repairs to components ranging from sticking accelerator pedals and slow-responding brakes to leaking steering hoses.

A Sienna went off the top of a parking garage in Houston this week. The article about it included the note that Toyota had told the paper the Sienna isn't one of their recalled models.

4. That's terrible!
Was anyone hurt?

I park daily in a parking garage, usually levels 3-5, and wonder from time to time if my car malfunctioned what I might do if it suddenly starting racing for the edge.

Driver killed in Houston parking garage plunge ID'd

HOUSTON CHRONICLE
April 17, 2010, 3:52PM

Authorities have identified a man who died Thursday morning after his Toyota Sienna plunged from an upper floor of a west Houston parking garage.

Thomas William Mather, 61, was alone in the minivan trying to park on the second floor around 8:45 a.m. when the vehicle ran through safety cables, fell 20 feet and landed on its roof.

Mather, of the 1000 block of Nickleson, was rushed to a hospital where he later died.

Police on Saturday were unsure if investigators were looking at any possible connection with Toyota's recent recalls, which did not include the model Mather was driving.
