Unemployment benefits expire for thousands (Sen. Coburn blocks extension)

(CNN) - Extended unemployment benefits will temporarily expire for thousands of Americans on Monday because the Senate went on its spring recess without approving a one-month deadline extension.

The extension, which had bipartisan support, would have cost about $10 billion, but a lone Republican, Sen. Tom Coburn, said no until the costs are offset.

The Oklahoma senator objected to a commonly used unanimous-consent agreement to pass the bill under emergency conditions, even if it increases the federal deficit. Coburn wants to eliminate additional government spending to pay for the bill.

"The legitimate debate is whether we borrow and steal from our kids or we get out of town and send the bill to our kids for something that we're going to consume today," Coburn said on the Senate floor.

It's the second time a Republican has blocked a so-called "emergency extension" of jobless benefits.

10. Who cares? They aren't born yet they don't matter.
All these "pro-life" people care little about actual life they only care about potential life. I'm sure he would say just go get a job to the millions on unemployment.

2. When are the people of Oklahoma going to wise up and boot
this idiot's ass? When people elect their "representatives" they do so with the anticipation that they are going to be at least marginally represented. Coburn is saying to his constitutents, "I don't care if you eat. I don't care if you are thrown out into the street. I don't care if you are hounded night and day by creditors. I don't care if you get sick and die."

And to think that the little shit is on the government payroll. Despicable.

Cut the MIC by $10 billion --

I've heard that if we combine our Army/Navy/Marines the way other nations have

done --rather than running separate services -- that we'd save 28% of our Military budget!!

Btw, I did call his office this morning to say just that --

and they answer the phone . . . "Dr. Coburn's office" -- !

He is a doctor -- one who doesn't care at all about the health of nation!!

6. Coburn is stupid saying "no until the costs are offset". He should recognize govt. never has to pay
for anything as long as we have credit with China.

11. Most voters will blame this on Democrats (the party in power)
Few voters know or care what goes on in the Senate. All they know is they are losing their benefits and the Democratic Party is running things. The Democratic Party needs to be doing everything possible (and then some) to get the truth out, or there'll be hell to pay in November.

13. When will the media tell the truth? It's NOT an "extension."
Edited on Mon Apr-05-10 03:51 PM by tonysam
What's being proposed is a moving back of the date to file for EUI.

A REAL extension, as in adding "tiers," hasn't been done since last fall.

Would be interesting. And do they agree they should be left to starve because they are losers and can't get a job! Say goodbye to the house. Say good bye to the cars. You lose.

18. Hoover used the same arguments during the Depression
"Blessed are the young for they shall inherit the national debt."
"Prosperity cannot be restored by raids upon the public Treasury."

Nothing has changed in the Republican party in 70 yrs. They've been using the same arguments for decades and decades.

20. I guess the teabaggers will blame Obama
They must all be rich and not have work for a living like their leaders Limbaugh,Hannity,Palin, Newt, etc. Everyone of the Congress critters and RW pundits and talk show hosts who scream about worrying about the future of their children and grandchildren have children and grandchildren who will inherit their millions and not have to work a day in their lives. And the poor working bloats among the teabaggers don't even understand that their mutual hate and scorn against Obama is the only thing they really have in common with their RW puppeteers. They all want to bring back the folks who gave ENRON, the collapse of our economy, and all the corruption, and 9/11 unjustified and costly invasion of Iraq. Racism and hate are and always have been strong motivators in this country.
