CBC member: Health bill protesters called Rep. Lewis the N-word
By Roxana Tiron - 03/20/10 03:27 PM ET

Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.) claimed Saturday that healthcare protesters at the Capitol directed racial epithets at Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) as he walked outside.

Carson, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus along with Lewis, told The Hill that protesters called Lewis the N-word.

Tea Party protesters held a rally outside the Capitol on Saturday, which included speeches by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and actor Jon Voight, and then proceeded into the halls to lobby members at the 11th hour.

Lewis was one of the leaders of the civil rights movement alongside Martin Luther King. Jr.

42. Teabaggers are FOXHOLES!
Fox created them.

Hate Radio encouraged them.

Our Corporate Controlled Conservative Press (CCCP, where have you seen that acronym before?) encourages every step they take.

They do not have what it takes to be an a-hole.

They don't even have what it takes to be a b-hole.

They are FOXHOLES.

They are Screwpert Murdoch's brood and they need to be sent a message that as long as they act like FOXHOLES, there is no place for them.

We're overdue for another civil war. We're due and it's time and it's gonna happen. It needs to happen.

101. the "scores from the Sixties"?- the SCORES???? Listen, Pal- if ANYONE had a "score to settle" it
certainly was NOT the whites enforcing Jim Crow. If anyone had a score to settle it would be those who were oppressed- the Civil Rights Act was just the beginning of that. Whites had NO score to settle.

So- you're "sorry to say"? yeah, you're sorry alright. If you think Whites have a score to settle over Blacks gaining equal rights, you're a sorry excuse for a human being.

82. i happened upon this group of idiots at the Capitol today - had a conversation with one
Edited on Sat Mar-20-10 09:26 PM by wordpix
The guy had a sign: "Keep your hands off my health care!" He looked like at least 65, so I said, you're on Medicare, right? He at first said no, and then I said, Gee you look like you're old enough for Medicare. So he then says, "Well I've worked for it so why not?" Well it was all downhill from there. I said I'd like Medicare, too, and I'm in my 50's and have paid in a lot of years, too. And young people who need it should have it, too, if they want it. He then spouted on about not giving it to everyone "for free," and I said, the idea is everyone pays into it, and young people who pay in contribute and don't typically need the amount of health services older people do. Well he just couldn't understand something that difficult.

Then some really angry bastard came up and yelled something at me and I said, "You guys really need to think about the insurance companies making billions each year, and they're kicking people out of their health insurance benefits when they get sick." This a-hole then said, "This is America---they have a right to make all the money they want." The guy looked like he'd pop me one any minute, but he was moving on with the all white crowd.

I finally just had to say, "Gee, you've really persuaded me with your anger and bad manners."

Then I went to the Impeach Bush rally in front of the WH. What a relief. Black, white, yellow, brown, young, old, people were playing drums and dancing and I caught the end of Ralph Nader's speech where he said we need a bill that says every grown child of every Congressman is drafted for a US war first.

It takes guts to conduct an actual conversation.

I'll be carrying around one of my paychecks so that if I bump into a 'bagger of the right age, I can show him/her what I paid in Medicare taxes and in health insurance premiums, the one for them, the other for me, and then ask if they think anything's free.

176. There has to be other ideas that can explain it too.
Like maybe he, his son, or grandkids played sports in high school. If they did, not everyone played or had anyone that played. But they still paid taxes that made it possible.

If he or anyone in his family votes. Not everyone votes but they still all pay taxes that made it possible.

If he or anyone in his family fishes or hunts. Not everyone does but they still all pay taxes that make it possible.

If he or anyone in his family borrows material from the library or use other services. Not everyone does but they still all pay taxes that make it possible.

55. It's worse-try the 16th century:
THESE ASSHOLES ARE AGAINST THE ENLIGHTENMENT, THE ROLE OF THOMAS JEFFERSON, AND EVOLUTION:

Blogging the Social Studies Debate IV
By TFN
9:20 – The State Board of Education will resume debate and amending proposed new social studies curriculum standards for Texas public schools this morning. Board members are getting a short lesson on parliamentary procedure right now.

9:27 – The board is taking up remaining amendments on the high school world history course.

9:30 – Board member Cynthia Dunbar wants to change a standard having students study the impact of Enlightenment ideas on political revolutions from 1750 to the present. She wants to drop the reference to Enlightenment ideas (replacing with “the writings of”) and to Thomas Jefferson. She adds Thomas Aquinas and others. Jefferson’s ideas, she argues, were based on other political philosophers listed in the standards. We don’t buy her argument at all. Board member Bob Craig of Lubbock points out that the curriculum writers clearly wanted to students to study Enlightenment ideas and Jefferson. Could Dunbar’s problem be that Jefferson was a Deist? The board approves the amendment, taking Thomas Jefferson OUT of the world history standards.

9:40 – We’re just picking ourselves up off the floor. The board’s far-right faction has spent months now proclaiming the importance of emphasizing America’s exceptionalism in social studies classrooms. But today they voted to remove one of the greatest of America’s Founders, Thomas Jefferson, from a standard about the influence of great political philosophers on political revolutions from 1750 to today.

These folks are clearly opposed to enlightenment rationality, or any rationality. The idea that this country was founded on a secular, sometimes anti-clerical, rational philosophy that believed in science and thought to use it to maximize human freedom is one that they cannot stomach, especially since it's true.

160. So Pat obviously doesn't have a clue as to what that song is about.
It's sung from the viewpoint of a rural Southern farmer that didn't give a damn about the Confederacy and had nothing to do with slavery. If it was a right-wing anthem, Joan Baez would never have recorded it.

164. Let's let the lyrics speak for themselves, then guess what Buchanan meant.
Virgil Caine is the name, and I served on the Danville train,
'Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again.
In the winter of '65, We were hungry, just barely alive.
By May the tenth, Richmond had fell, it's a time I remember, oh so well,

(Chorus)
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and the bells were ringing,
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and the people were singin'. They went
La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La,

Back with my wife in Tennessee, When one day she called to me,
"Virgil, quick, come see, there goes Robert E. Lee!"
Now I don't mind choppin' wood, and I don't care if the money's no good.
Ya take what ya need and ya leave the rest,
But they should never have taken the very best. (Chorus)

Like my father before me, I will work the land,
Like my brother above me, who took a rebel stand.
He was just eighteen, proud and brave, But a Yankee laid him in his grave,
I swear by the mud below my feet,
You can't raise a Caine back up when he's in defeat. (Chorus and fade)

Supposedly, the Democratic Party's base is dispirited; and few things mobilize our base more than racism, homophobica, or other ideological enemies of human rights.

BTW, in mid-term elections, the party in power always loses some seats, so don't be giving racist shits any credit for it. After all, I'm sure they tried very their best in 2008 to keep an African American out of the Oval Office, but President Obama handily beat Senator McLame and Governor Even Lamer, despite the pathetic best efforts of racists. See, America is better than racists. How's that for American exceptionalism?

I can't say you're honest, because you are posting on a board that is only for Democrats, and you probably have more than once screen name here, too. However, I do congratulate you on at least semi-owning both your racism and your resemblance to cornered rats. Most people deny both, but you've given yourself away. Not exactly honest, but at least not skilled at deceit.

The more you post, the more you'll fire up the base. The more you fire up the base, the better I like it. So I'm hoping you post here a lot, nimrod. Raise your post count, you!

America is not yet post-racial. The post-racial meme is, IMO, a myth created and attempted to be propagated by RWers. However, I believe that racists are in a pathetic, impotent, embarrassing minority. The majority of Americans are more repulsed by racism than attracted by it.

"It was absolutely shocking to me," Clyburn told the Huffington Post. "Last Monday, this past Monday, I stayed home to meet on the campus of Claflin University where fifty years ago as of last Monday... I led the first demonstrations in South Carolina, the sit ins... And quite frankly I heard some things today I have not heard since that day. I heard people saying things that I have not heard since March 15, 1960 when I was marching to try and get off the back of the bus."

Of course they're saying the same thing - it's the same goddamned people, their ideological descendants.

How could any Republican politician so out of touch that he never heard of the Tea Party win?

How could any politician caught in a flat out lie like that win?

Boggles the mind.

85. I predict there wll violence if the vote is for HCR. And if it gets big,
the police may not be able to do anything about it. Years ago when I lived in Ohio, I knew some of these people. Their houses and garages were full of guns. They had grednades, bazooks, boxes of explosives. Now, maybe they're nicer now, but I would doubt it.

191. For the demonstrators? Not so well. But the entire crowd was
not demonstrators. Some were innocent people. I saw the cops pull a lady out of Pontiac convertible who wasn't doing anything except sitting there waiting for a light to change. They beat the crap out of her and tossed her back in the care semi-conscious. I and a bunch of others went over to help her. The cops charged again, but this time there wasn't enough of them. For me? Someone ripped the antennae off my car. That convention changed my life forever. I saw insanity from both the crowds and the cops. I also learned to not paint with broad brushes again.

98. You may be right but...
if it does happen, it will be the biggest mistake these morons ever made. They will expose themselves for what they truly are to the entire country, because it would be too big of a news story for the MSM to pass up. There would be many, many other repercussions for them too. A group that uses killing or violence against others could not possibly continue to exist legally, and they would be reduced to shoot-outs with the Feds in backwoods camps. We are far from what things were like during the civil war era. The speed of information for one thing. The U.S. government certainly has more fire power now, and certainly much, much more than this small group of idiots have - like one puny, weak person fighting a group of huge angry men. They may get their shots in, but they wouldn't last long. That's why I laugh when states like Texas talk about succeeding. They would lose all U.S. goverment support (which they claim they don't want) and would quickly become a third-world country. They then would be desperate (no exports of food, etc. going to them). They would lose all their rights of citizenship, no funds from taxes, nothing, and nothing to fight with. They are just a bunch of blow-hard bullies that will soon dissolve because, what they truly are, are cowards.

Some of these folks anger, I understand. Some of it, not at all. I would not try to assuage the feelings of ones who have lost their jobs, their homes, their money, their dignity, their purpose with mere words. That won't work. Yes, by all means, turn it over to the military. Let the military take care of these scum. Round them up. Make them watch Lady Gaga sing about wanting to sit on her boyfriend's "disco stick". That should enlighten them.

André is the grandson of our beloved Julia Carson, who passed away in 2007 after a long illness. André is a strong supporter of LGBT rights, not just paying lip service to get our votes, but actually helping the LGBT community and not being shy about being in our annual pride march.

This is a shocking incident that exposes the racism among the tea baggers.

WASHINGTON - House Democrats heard it all Saturday — words of inspiration from President Barack Obama and raucous chants of protests from demonstrators. And at times it was flat-out ugly, including some racial epithets aimed at black members of Congress.........

The tone was set outside the Capitol. Clogging the sidewalks and streets of Capitol Hill were at least hundreds — no official estimate was yet available — of loud, furious protesters, many of them tea party opponents of the health care overhaul.

Rallies outside the Capitol are typically orderly, with speeches and well-behaved crowds. Saturday's was different, with anger-fueled demonstrators surrounding members of Congress who walked by, yelling at them.

"Kill the bill," the largely middle-aged crowd shouted, surging toward lawmakers who crossed the street between their office buildings and the Capitol.

Rep. Andre Carson, D-Ind., told a reporter that as he left the Cannon House Office Building with Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., a leader of the civil rights era, some among the crowd chanted "the N-word, the N-word, 15 times." Both Carson and Lewis are black, and Lewis spokeswoman Brenda Jones also said that it occurred.

Clyburn, who led fellow black students in integrating South Carolina's public facilities a half century ago, called the behavior "absolutely shocking.""I heard people saying things today that I have not heard since March 15, 1960, when I was marching to try to get off the back of the bus," Clyburn told reporters.

118. When babies are born, if healthy, they are all miracles.
They learn to talk in a couple of years, walk in one, etc.

The ignorance comes from a lack of education.
From the parents who are not educated enough to realize the critical need for interaction with the children, I see them hang on their cell phones in grocery stores, with the little ones in the seat of the cart, NOT learning colors and shapes and being talked to.

On it goes to the fact that Abraham Maslov's hierarchy of needs only allows the parents to spend time looking after food, shelter, clothing and hearth care, there is no time to look after the needs of the child.

Proceeding to schools with underpaid teachers, teaching to the tests, etc. etc. etc.

Once we have health care under control (PRAY)
and get some job programs going (Pray some more)
we have got to tackle education, or we will lose it all.

125. 'Tea party' protesters accused of spitting on lawmaker, using slurs
Source: Washington Post

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus said that racial epithets were hurled at them Saturday by angry protesters who had gathered at the Capitol to protest health-care legislation, and one congressman said he was spit upon. The most high-profile openly gay congressman, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), was heckled with anti-gay chants.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) issued a statement late Saturday saying that he was spit upon while walking to the Capitol to cast a vote, leading the Capitol Police to usher him into the building out of concern for his safety. Police detained the individual, who was then released because Cleaver declined to press charges.

"The congressman was walking into the Capitol to vote, when one protester spat on him. The congressman would like to thank the U.S. Capitol Police officer who quickly escorted the other Members and him into the Capitol, and defused the tense situation with professionalism and care," said Danny Rotert, a spokesman for Cleaver.

Protesters outside the Capitol hurled epithets at Reps. John Lewis (D-Ga.) and Andre Carson (D-Ind.) as they left the building after President Obama delivered an 11th-hour speech on behalf of the health care bill. Carson told reporters that protesters yelled "kill the bill," then used a racial epithet to describe Carson and Lewis, who is a revered figure on both sides of the aisle.

Maybe this is what Bush always wanted and was unable to create - maybe it was beyond his wildest dreams. Whatever the case, I think you're right. The worst part is that the media - even discounting the media who created them - lap it up and in turn give it legitimacy.

Even though I've never handled a gun in my life, this makes me think more about starting an unabashedly liberal gun owners' group to counteract the NRA... of course it could never have the same draw, since the NRA has never really been about gun ownership, but about racism and oppression.

147. you have it backwards
gun control is about racism and oppression.

here's a hint.

which racial demographics are (by far) the most prone to be victims of violent crime?

oppression is taking away people's constitutional right to keep and bear arms in defense of themselves and their loved ones.

gun control is rooted in racism and fear of "inner city " (a euphemism for black) people with guns.

it is certainly a hell of a lot easier to oppress unarmed people vs armed people

193. Really?
National Rifle Association (NRA) Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre has once again demonstrated the core values of the NRA's leadership: hypocrisy and racism. As a guest on CBS News' Face the Nation this past Sunday, LaPierre was asked about a recent column he wrote for American Rifleman in which he stated: "There are many politicians willing to sacrifice the Second Amendment as the first step in the homogenization of American culture."

Denying that the statement contained "racial overtones," LaPierre claimed that the NRA "has a proud relationship with the African-American community." Research by the Violence Policy Center (VPC), however, finds that LaPierre's "homogenization" concerns are simply the latest in a long line of racist statements by NRA officials. For example:

-- Current NRA President Charlton Heston, in defending "white pride" in a speech before the Free Congress Foundation, urged the audience to "draw your sword and fight" against a variety of opponents, including "blacks who raise a militant fist with one hand while they seek preference with the other." He told his listeners, "Mainstream America is counting on you."

-- Current NRA Board Member Jeff Cooper, in dismissing urban gun victims - the majority of which are young black males - wrote in Guns & Ammo that "the consensus is that no more than five to ten people in a hundred who die by gunfire in Los Angeles are any loss to society. These people fight small wars amongst themselves. It would seem a valid social service to keep them well-supplied with ammunition." Cooper also refers to persons of Japanese ancestry as "Nips" and has suggested calling black South Africans from the Gauteng province "Oran-gautengs."

http://www.commondreams.org/news2000/0516-03.htm

As the poster said, they're more about racism than they are about gun rights.

It's about a Democrat who is also black man succeeding. If he was a black Republican passing healthcare, they'd be worshiping at his feet. But no, he's on the wrong team, so as they lose their composure the underlying racism of the 'white straight man' party bubbles to the surface. It is, of course, not a surprise to those of us who've been pointing out the "stuck at age 15" base of the Republican Party.

140. Wouldn't some of this be considered incitement to riot.
At the very least there should be some grounds for assault
charges be laid. Where are the cops?
That yellow sign must breach some sort of law. Freedom of
expression must certainly NOT mean the promise of violence.

146. That depends entirely
on who is doing the incitement.

148. not if you understand 1st amendment law
Edited on Sun Mar-21-10 02:54 AM by paulsby
the standard was LONG AGO established under brandenburg.

do i really have to repeat the standard to you?

it (used to ) astound me how few people (on this website and elsewhere) understand the BASIC concepts of free speech.

and there were grounds for assault charges to be pressed in regards to the spitting, but the congressman victim declined to press charges

150. The spitting is something I could not walk away from
The least I would have done is press charges. I would have asked him to name his seconds. Pigs

186. Spitting is at least attempted battery, not only assault. And you do not need a victim's
consent to press charges.

Knowing how to repeat a legal standard, like that articulated in the Brandenburg case, and knowing how to apply it to a given set of facts are two very different things. So is inciting violence, period, very different from advocating that a sitting POTUS should be shot.

137. Cleaver has some class not to press charges
Pisses me off though, I'd put the punk who did that in his place if I could, as a fellow Missourian.

149. Something really bad will come from this.
It won't surprise me one bit if some wacko involved in the teabag movement ends up killing a bunch of people at a protest someday. Every time you see them on TV they look like their out of their damn minds.

151. Round up the tea braggers and send their asses to Afghanistan
where they can tote their guns 24/7...and bring the soldiers home.

These neanderfu?ks are up to no good. Put Dick Armey's Army in the Army if they really have the guts and nuts to fight.

What those Tea Braggers did yesterday is in the past. I'm sure that left alone, they will do better tomorrow.
