House Dems drop 'deem and pass' in favor of separate vote on Senate health bill
Source: Washington Post

House Democratic leaders say they will take a separate vote on the Senate health care bill, rejecting an earlier, much-criticized strategy that would have permitted them to "deem" the measure passed without an explicit vote.

11. Agreed - this is good news
Not only does it take away one of the Whiners complaints - but it probably puts at least two more undecided Dems into the "Yes" column:

Democrats moved toward separating the votes after several members, including Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Calif.) and Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.), had said they could not support the procedural maneuver.

5. The best news yet. THREE votes.
You can't make it any clearer than that.

THREE VOTES- http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/20/AR2010032001651.html

"Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) said Saturday that the House would take three votes Sunday: first, on a resolution that will set the terms of debate; second, on a package of amendments to the Senate bill that have been demanded by House members; and third, on the Senate bill itself. "

Good idea.

Support.

15. Not Lynch...
Lynch has said he's a definite "no" on the current HCR bill, no matter what.

26. Van Hollen said something different yesterday on CNN
Yesterday on CNN Van Hollen said, when asked by Blitzer, if they have enough votes in the Senate to pass a reconcilliation bill -- Van Hollen said "no."

What I want to know is if they have the 51 votes in the Senate to pass the reconcilliation bill?

Or will we end up with the corporate written Senate bill as law without a "fix" thru reconcillation?

They fold quite easily.

They should have said "it's not our preferred option, but everything is on the table."

9. By voting on the amendments before the Senate bill,
they accomplish the same as with deem-and-pass, without waving a red flag before the nutbags.

17. If they did them together under deem and pass it would be
easier to hide a yes vote on the Senate bill with an adjustment vote in the reconciler. Now, maybe the reversal positioning will help, but maybe not. Kind of curious. Can you imagine the embarrassment for Pelosi if the Senate Bill doesn't pass? Whew?

12. They must have the votes. The hell with the Repukes and Stupak. Ram it through.
I will be working on this Sunday at the office (and sneaking peeks at MSU v. Maryland, of course). Time to win this thing and make Boehner turn red in the face (oh wait, too late for that . . . )

14. Another cave to the right, I see...
...which will be of no avail, as the myth will still be spread that "the socialist Democrat Party tried to ram health-care through without a vote." :eyes:

18. It's basically a Reep bill, a very bad bill..
.. but we're all defending it because it's better than
nothing.. or something like that.

So the Reeps can't support it because it's a Reep-in-
Dem-clothing bill.

So next thing you know, the country will backlash against
the Dems, and then things will only get even worse than
they are now.

Fun, huh?

22. I don't think this will pass. Somebody's gonna fuck it up.
I knew all the cheering had to be premature.

If people have to go on the record, and we still need three separate votes, I don't see HOW it can pass.

Hope the anti's are happy.

it means support for the bill is stronger than it apeared. If they can take it to an open vote they have a lock.

Either way I think an open "transparent" vote is the way to go. Let the chips fall where they may.
