Tommy Thompson Records Destroyed (WI Gov)
(Madison-AP)The state Assembly speaker is asking the Justice Department to investigate the destruction of several hundred boxes of state records.

Democratic Governor Doyle and his cabinet officials say the destruction of records from Tommy Thompson administration is an accident. Doyle's administrators say the boxes were to be sent to the Wisconsin Historical Society, but were inadvertently put on the wrong truck and sent to a Green Bay paper mill, where they were turned into pulp.

Accident hell. Included in these records was all the correspondence on the contracting of the Brewers stadium, along with other interesting documents related to Tommy's corrupt political cronyism.

2. There are still a lot of Tommy-era functionaries
in state gov't here. I think it was a two-pronged attack, in which Thompson people first shipped the records off for destruction and then blamed the Doylites, claiming they were trying to destroy Tommy's legacy. Bullshit. The Brewers stadium deal was a backdoor shifting of cash to Tommy's friends. I wouldn't be surprised if records on the Crandon Mine dealings also disappeared. The press here always rolled over & played dead for Tommy, except for one promising but short-lived series of expository stories in the Milw. J-S in about 1998.

6. Duh. Link.

A more comprehensive story:

Solberg said the vast majority of records were constituency correspondence, and others involved extraditions and executive clemency. Correspondence related to the construction and public financing of Miller Park also was lost.

5. OK.
Liar and crook. Those terms sound so commonplace, so...inadequate when applied to that disgusting little greaseball. Toxic Tommy was a truly incredible figure in WI politics who managed to singlehandedly destroy whatever was left of the old LaFollette tradition of clean state politics. Well, not singlehandedly. He had plenty of willing help (on both sides of the aisle, sadly), but he's the one who created the environment in which it all flourished.

Why does this sound phony to me? Yes I'm cynical but this kind of accident just seems to happen to records that may impact some repuke office holder. They either bury them from FOIA requests due to national security (read bullshit) purposes or they get erased, or shredded or lost, or in the case of votes for Democrats not counted.

I'd say there's a bit of irony in that fact, too.
