Pelosi says GOP has hijacked 'tea party' movement
Source: AP

WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is questioning whether the conservative "tea party" coalition truly represents a grass-roots movement.

In a broadcast interview, Pelosi calls tea party voters the "astroturf" movement. She says many of those voters have good intentions but that the Republican Party has hijacked the movement for its gain.

The San Francisco Democrat says the tea party coalition shares some common ground with Democrats, such as their dislike of special interests in Washington. She cited public disdain for the recent Supreme Court ruling on campaign finance that allows companies and unions to spend freely on ads that promote or target particular candidates by name.

2. The Wingnut Wurlitzer created the damn Tea Buggers in the first place..
Faux N00Z is the loudest pipe of the Wingnut Wurlitzer and it spent a great deal of time, energy and money egging on the Teabuggers, with Glenn Beck as principal soloist..

4. Exactly
How can you "hijack" a movement created from scratch by your corporate masters?

Encouragingly, even wingnuts are seeing through it. One regular crank letter writer to my rural Indiana hometown paper complained that he went to a tea party event and it wasn't regular folks like him carrying pitchforks running the show, but a slickly-orchestrated event.

22. Actually the rant that started the Tea Party nomenclature was from CNBC's

Santelli

And the rant took place in front of a bunch of stockbrokers at the Chicago exchange, castigating any Main St help for homeowners, calling them losers

"Mr. Ross has nailed it. The government is promoting bad behavior. We certainly don’t want to put stimulus pork and give people a whopping $8 or $10 in their check and think that they ought to save it.

And in terms of modifications, I tell you what. I have an idea. The new administration is big on computers and technology. How about this, Mr. President and new administration. Why don’t you put up a website to have people vote on the internet as a referendum to see if we really want to subsidize the losers mortgages? Or would they like to at least buy buy cars, buy a house that is in foreclosure … give it to people who might have a chance to actually prosper down the road and reward people that can carry the water instead of drink the water?

This is America! (he turns to the traders nearby)

How many people want to pay for your neighbor’s mortgages that has an extra bathroom and can’t pay their bills? Raise their hand!

President Obama, are you listening?

You know Cuba used to have mansions and a relatively decent economy. They moved from the individual to the collective. Now they're driving '54 Chevys.

It's time for another tea party.

What we are doing in this country will make Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin roll over in their graves."

3. Ya think?
Play to people's fears and play the race card. That's all the GOP has got. That and completely uneducated fascist spokesmen like Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity, who have - what - maybe a month of college between them?

Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 10:26 AM by GinaMaria
months before we knew the outcome of the 2008 election and promoted it through their media channels. This is 100% a republicant party effort. Hijacked, implies it started out legitimately.

You know how you can tell when someone is pandering on this issue of the court's decision? They throw in the "and unions" canard.

9. In Texas the Tea Party is hijacking the GOP
Debra Medina, new star of America's right, is firing up the race for Texas governor

Debra Medina of the Tea Party movement is making a Sarah Palin-like impact with policies stressing property rights and gun ownership

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/feb/28/tea-party-debra-medina-texas

Her platform: Property rights and Gun ownership.

The GOP has a much broader platform, which includes opposition to immigration, taxes, school reform, healthcare, science, civil rights ...

19. EXACTLY!
Thank you for saying it.

Is there a greater crime than torture?

After WWII democratic countries made it their greatest priority to punish those that engaged in institutionalized cruelty and torture. Indeed this cruelty is why we hated the Nazis. At the time of WWII the German ethnic group was the largest in the U.S. - they were us, or just like us, other than cruelty and fascism.

But in this country, now, we must look forward. Not only with regard to torture but all sorts of malfeasance.

What in the fuck is going on here folks? I've got a clue for you. It isn't because Obama is too nice or that Democrats need to grow a spine.

This is no longer the United States of America. When it happened I have no idea.

21. Those are challenging words
She's thrown down. This is a very intelligent woman. . . I'm wondering if she caught the WaPo article on the Coffee Party? There' some kind of back end strategy going on with that. Not going to knock SOH Pelosi at all. She hasn't said the words to date that I'm aware of. After her 'closing comments' at the summit on Thursday to the effect of, "After all you have been out there saying - this past summer."

She's calling them out and creating doubt. I like that. Good for her for putting it out there. I wonder if this will be a part of the 2010 Strategery?
