Trial for Luis Posada continues to drag
Source: The Miami Herald

The federal trial of Cuban militant exile Luis Posada Carriles, which was scheduled to start March 1, has been postponed for at least three months.

U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone in El Paso, Texas, Thursday granted the prosecution's request for a delay and set May 20 for a status conference to determine whether a new trial date could be set then.

The prosecution's motion was sealed -- kept secret -- by Cardone, so it was impossible to determine why the government sought the last-minute delay in a case that has been on the docket since 2007.

The motion was only one of a flurry of about 40 sealed motions filed in the case since Jan. 1 by several parties involved. Some attorneys described it as an unusual level of secrecy.

2. Gee, a real live terrorist on trial
Prolly read him his rights and everything. The main difference being the cause Mr. Posada was using terror to advance, which makes ALL the difference in the world. Now, if he'd been some goatherd turned in by an enemy over the next ridge, he would have been imprisoned, waterboarded, and held indefinitely without charge. Instead, all he is accused of doing is blowing up an airplane, and some unspecified unpleasantness in Washington DC. Hardly anything for anyone to get too excited about, since he's allegedly fighting against Castro and communism.

3. Right, it's all in the past. We need to look forward!
No sense dredging up old news like Orlando Letelier, Iran/Contra, Bay of Pigs.

5. But innocent goat herders in Gitmo look forward to a lifetime of incarceration
because our government doesn't want them talking to the press.

The corruption reeks.

6. As a guy who's been up to his eyebrows in mass murder, drugs, Iran/Contra,

Posada is probably someone the gov't doesn't really want running around loose any longer, especially since he was living in Miami freely until he decided to give a presser, and made the front pages in Florida.

If they don't handle him with kid gloves they'll have the hard-right reactionary "exiles" in Miami tearing the town apart, and going on a hate binge which would easily create a lot of dead people. You remember how they threw fits in the streets of Miami and burned tires, clogged up traffic in the city, on the highways in and out of Miami, went on a city-wide work strike, punished merchants who decided to stay open during their mass temper tantrum, when the U.S. government finally went in and toook back Elian Gonzalez, as per the federal court order, and later returned him to his home with his family.d

Luis Posada Carriles is a bomber, a mass murderer, a criminal, but in Miami, he's a hero. The government is going though contortions trying to avoid hacking off the same people, and their offspring, who caused the Cubans to overthrow them in the last Cuban revolution.

of a tribute they arranged for him, and a fund-raising to provide resources
for his future legal expenses during his pending case brought by the U.S. Gov't.

7. Posada is career criminal and an escaped fugitive from justice
but his face is never displayed on America's Mosted Wanted. John Walsh doesn't seem to care, although he has previously publicized the case of Assata Shakur who was railroaded into prison but escaped to Cuba.

Posada is a convicted serial killer and mass-murderer who has yet to face the justice he deserves. He is by every definition a lifelong terrorist. Why is there is no one in the Justice Dept. who has the courage to arrest him and send him back to Venezuela (or Cuba)? He isn't hiding in a cave in SW Asia but living in a condo in Miami. Any cop in Miami can find his address and arrest him.

And with this injustice, it is also shameful that another rightwing extremist Cuban-American is running for Senate in Florida. Republicans are the "evil empire".
