Exclusive: War in Iraq to Be Given New Name
Edited on Thu Feb-18-10 08:11 PM by IDemo
Source: ABC News

ABC News has learned that the Obama administration has decided to give the war in Iraq -- currently known as Operation Iraqi Freedom -- a new name.

The new name: "Operation New Dawn."

In a February 17, 2010, memo to the Commander of Central Command, Gen. David Petraeus, Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the "requested operation name change is approved to take effect 1 September 2010, coinciding with the change of mission for U.S. forces in Iraq."

You can read the memo -- a copy of which was sent to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen - here.

I had to leave a comment: Well, since Operation Iraqi Liberation (OIL) was busted up by all those other countries bidding on OUR oil fields, I guess "New Dawn" will do. Much as it sounds like a dish soap, this brand won't wash the blood of innocents off your hands either.

12. Sadly
This isn't the first time they've opted for 'dawn' in Iraq. The action that caught Saddam was titled 'Operation Red Dawn,' with the target villages dubbed 'Wolverine 1' and 'Wolverine 2'. I hope they don't try to actually use this new name too much -- it's going to sound mighty lame coming out of Gibbs' mouth.

Hans: The following people are to be released from their captors: In Northern Ireland, the seven members of the New Provo Front. In Canada, the five imprisoned leaders of Liberte de Quebec. In Sri Lanka, the nine members of the Asian Dawn movement...
John McClane: What the fuck?
Karl: Asian Dawn?
Hans: I read about them in Time magazine.

19. Lots of politics here
Beyond the obvious, there are reasons the military likes to do this. New mission, new ribbons. Promotions depend upon certain kinds of service experience and this allows folks to get "another" bit of experience. There was a bunch of fuss under Bush II because the White House wouldn't let them structure Afghanistan and Iraq as separate "theaters". Doing so would have allowed folks to get different ribbons for separate tours.

33. Thanks, that's actually interesting
Hidden amongst the predictable Obama = Bush posts, it was tough to find. :D

That's a shame about Iraq and Afghanistan not having particular ribbons. I've found it's a neat bit of insider knowledge to be able to point at a dress uniform and strike up a conversation about where they've been. :)

62. The tenets of advertsing and marketing now dominate every aspect of life in our Empire
That's why.

They are just rebranding and marketing a new title.

Some Focus Group whizzes have figured that the new brand, not coincdientally titled "New Dawn" in accordance with psycholinguistic necessity, will work better on the American Subject Populace.

Know what? They're right.

Reality simply has no place in our Empire. None whatsoever.
