Sarah Palin Calls Family Guy Joke a "Kick in the Gut"
Edited on Tue Feb-16-10 12:16 PM by RamboLiberal
Source: CBS News

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is continuing to use her high profile to bring attention to instances of misuse of the word "retarded" and disparaging portrayals of the mentally challenged.

Early today, Palin responded on Facebook to an episode of the Fox television show "Family Guy" that poked fun at Palin, whose son has Down Syndrome. The episode features a mentally challenged character who says her mother is the former governor of Alaska.

Palin said the episode "felt like another kick in the gut." She provided a statement from her oldest daughter Bristol, who wrote, "Shouldn't we be willing to say that some things just are not funny? Are there any limits to what some people will do or say in regards to my little brother or others in the special needs community?"

Earlier this month, Palin said that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel should be fired for an incident in which he referred to a group of liberals as "F-ing retarded." However, when conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh repeatedly used the word "retard" in a pejorative manner on his radio show, Palin chided the incident but on "Fox News Sunday" this week dismissed it as satire. She also refrained from asking her ally Texas Gov. Rick Perry to fire his top campaign consultant for demeaning use of the word.

I just watched the clip and saw nothing for her to get offended about. Hey Sarah, guess whose network owns that show. Your employer & Buddy Rupert Murdoch. Bet if given the choice of appeasing you or pissing off Family Guy producers - he'll choose the producers, they make him more money.

Stephen Colbert called Sarah Palin a fucking retard on his show a week or so ago.

91. She defended limbaugh's use of the word, said it was only satire.
Guess she has no problem with satire by a human turd and it offends her if a cartoon character is the source of satire.

Calling her a hypocrite is being too polite.

2. Isn't it more likely that a "special" child resulted from a father-daughter coupling than from
Caribou Barbie and that "father?"

Perhaps that is why the POS is so sensitive about the topic. It is an in-her-face reminder that she and her family are poster stars of dysfunction.

79. ...or brother and sister....
Bristol's brother was sent away in the service around that time that she missed school for so many months before her 'brother' was born. They claim it was "Mono" (infectous mononuclosis) for all that time that kept her from school. I wouldn't doubt the Father-daughter relationship or that of Sarah and HER Father....he acted very weird around her during the campaign when her male 'handlers' tried to talk to her. He literally had his arms around her when they would approach her and he stared them down....what a low-life family. They disgust me just observing them.

101. Thanks for reminding me why I'm coming to DU less and less these days.
People bitch about Palin's "hypocrisy" but I wonder what the response here would be if similar jabs were directed toward those prominent liberals and progressives who have special-needs children? While we're at it, let's call up Maria Shriver and the rest of the Kennedy family so they can get in on this "harmless" bit of satire too.

I remember the totally justifiable outrage when Rush Limbaugh called a preteen Chelsea Clinton ugly. Making sport of a retarded child, or using that child to get back at an incompetent parent, goes **way** beyond any line Rush crossed all those years ago. These children do not ask for the hand in life they were dealt -- be it Chelsea Clinton in 1993 or Trigg Palin today. Let them alone. Going after the kid to score points against Mom or Dad is cowardly and indefensible.

Futhermore they did it for a response mainly CUZ Family Guy has jumped the shark.

But it just proves how low Palin is to have to respond to a jumped the shark show.

77. He's not as funny as he used to be, but the show is wildly satirical.
They actually made the special needs girls tough, as she dumped Chris. There was worse things in that episode that were slams against other types of people, but it's understood by adults that it's nasty satire. Which is still satire. Palin should have just rolled with the punches. It wasn't that bad of an episode - I'm sure they could be overwhelmingly worse than this to her if they wanted to.

81. The only baby I saw was Stewie.
I didn't hear the name "Trig".
I didn't hear the name "Palin".

I saw a female adolescent, described as disabled who none-the-less acted as any "normal" teenage girl might act, IF she was a spoiled little princess intent on demanding attention. The character *actually* represents Palin herself, a spoiled, self-absorbed brat with limited intellectual ability but a compulsion to manipulate everyone she comes into contact with.

Apt and witty, in my opinion.

Satire is not kind. If Trig was loosely alluded too, it serves to underscore Palin's disgustingly cynical pandering of the disabled child in her possession. I think her campaign alone constituted abuse.

Munchausen-by-proxy exists, and Palin should be a documented clinical example.

"...all babies should be off limits." In what way was Trig Palin injured by the parody of his mother? Don't you think that any real injury to Trig was caused by Palin dragging him as a prop down her campaign trail? Don't you see that she's still only using him, feigning indignation? As been mentioned elsewhere in this thread, she has made excuses for Rush Limbaugh's insensitivity, yet was outraged at FG's jibe. I don't believe her.

Seth, by exposing her, may possibly save Trig from being exploited in the future.

Except she's still getting sympathy from folks like you.

Where Seth failed is obvious. Satire always runs the risk of being misinterpreted. His presentation was a bit too subtle.

I guffawed.

16. More double standard. Republicans have been mocking Democrats about being "P.C." for a long time.
As though being concerned with hurting other people were some kind of foolishness.

But, now that Sarah Palin wants everyone to be P.C., every time she gets offended (or, as with Limbaugh, doesn't get offended) it's news?

Meanwhile, we're at war in at least two countries, which never gets covered, our economy is in the hopper and congress hasn't passed new laws to prevent another bailout. About 50,000 die every year from lack of health care. A snowstorm leaves kids without food because all the food some of them get is from the school cafeteria. Etc.

What the hell is wrong with media in this country?

What the hell is wrong with us that we accept infotainment instead of the kind of news that helps us be citizens?

Edited on Tue Feb-16-10 02:19 PM by Moostache
I do not care one tenth of one shit about ANYTHING on the MSM or on network TV or the so-called "news" that gets broadcast.

Our entire profit-driven, infinite-growth-inside-a-finite-system world is a cesspool in need of a reboot. The extinction of humanity will be the best thing to happen to the planet in eons; and perhaps, just perhaps, evolution will produce something wiser and saner next time around - so that those beings will realize using our decayed carbon matter in infinitely stupid ways is something that is to be avoided at all costs.

George Carlin (may he rest in peace, and always be remembered fondly and with a smile) was 100% right about many, many things; but, his take on the environment rings truer and truer with every passing year: "Save the planet? The PLANET ain't going anywhere....WE ARE!" As corporations increasingly tighten their death grip on all of civilization, the magnificence of our technology will fade away and the lost opportunity of what could have been will only serve to make the last generation of humans more indignant at our current stupidity.

To those future generations, I can only say I'm sorry. I tried, but I am failing.
To the current people obsessing over the perceived "insult" to a media-made vapid caricature, I can only again say I'm sorry. But in this case I am only sorry for your pathetic existence, and the fact that you continue to waste additional natural resources keeping your useless meat locker of consumption alive.

43. Sarah should STFU
and go relax on one of those back wood Grifter properties she had hidden. She can hunt and fish and run around screaming with a towel on her head and little else. She can scream about how she lost to Obama and can't get over it. And scream about how every one is to blame for everything that has gone wrong in her life. Release some of the psychotic behavior she continues to show to the public. Leave us alone before we become just as crazy as she is.

48. Wow. Her base must be really messed up by this.
Talk about Political Correctness run amok.

I will give her one thing: I think Family Guy making a joke about the kid is inappropriate.

Unfortunately, since Sarah decided any use of the term (except by Republicans) was a personal insult to her child, it kind of minimizes the impact of her whining.

I think we should all try not to use terms like 'retarded' when describing Republickers and Teabaggers. For example, you could call Republican proposals for health care reform 'triggy' instead.

But I have more of an issue with the use of the "f" word. I know it's old fashioned and the word has become at least as socially acceptable as "ain't" (just going by the number of times a day I hear it), but it still grates on me. Especially when people in authority use the word.

53. S.P. to world: "Pay attention to ME!"
Yeah, Family Guy is tasteless humor. It always has been. You either like it or you don't. Whatever. I just get the feeling that she is expressing outrage just because she knows it will get her free media attention. She doesn't go nuts (at least not publicly) whenever someone calls her crazy or stupid. That would draw attention to her being crazy and stupid. But riding public sympathy for a special needs child has no downside.

I say this with all due respect to Hillary Clinton... but when I hear a statement like that coming from a woman candidate with any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism or you know maybe a sharper microscope put on her, I think you know that doesn't do us any good – women in politics, women in general wanting to progress this country.

:hide:

Trig Palin (Ironically named, since he will never master Trigonometry) is a hilariously retarded demon child made up of a little of Sarah Palin, Bristol Palin, Fred Phelps, and some semen forced out of Todd Palin's penis. He is Bristol Palin's first child and is the first grandson/fifth son of 2008 Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

There has been some debate over whether or not Trig Palin actually has down syndrome. Some observers claim that Trig's unusual appearance is due to the fact that he is Asian.

One possible cause of Trig Van Palin’s mental retardation is incest. Another likely cause is Trig's father is Special Ed from Crank Yankers.

Conception
Trig Palin was conceived in June of 2007 when her soon to be teenage mother, Bristol Palin, got obscenely drunk at a party and decided to act on a dare from her friends. Britstol's friends dared her to have sex with a retarded chimpanzee as a joke. But to their surprise, Bristol actually went through with it. Bristol claims to have no memory of this event since it is likely she blacked out during the sexual act.

68. Chill out a little, Palin
I saw the clip and am very familiar with the show. I also work with people with developmental disabilities and I become very angry when someone picks on them. The only thing I thought was wrong is that they threw in the line about her mother being the former governor of Alaska. For one thing, it didn't even fit there considering that Trig is a boy, and it also was a very cheap jab at Palin. I don't like her. I think she would be this country's demise if she did become president but it isn't cool to use anyone's child whether they have a disability or not in a joke. I also think she set herself up for it, though, with all the whining she does. The thing about Family Guy is that they make fun of everyone and in light of that, they were actually pretty cool in how they portrayed the character with downs syndrome. I still like the show and I will continue taking it as it is: a satire.

Family guy is hackneyed, unoriginal drivel whose creators make up for any real writing talent by going for deliberately offensive laughs.
The show has a long history of making fun of the disabled.
The joke wasn't funny and was cruel. Palin or not, it was poking fun at someone who didn't deserve it.
That said, Palin long threw away the phony "righteous outrage" when she gave every rightwing radio prick a pass for similar content. And she's all too willing to use her kids as props to further her career.

96. Just turn off the television or change channels.
This joke was certainly not in the best taste, but I am frankly sick and tired of Sarah's feigned outrage over stuff like this. She is using these volatile words simply to gain attention for herself, and that makes her as bad as anyone she criticizes in my view.

The Family Guy has a right to free speech, and if she or anyone (including myself) doesn't like what is being delivered on the television, then she or anyone need only to turn the television off or change channels.

To constantly rail about words that are poorly chosen rather than to concentrate on the harder questions is a real copout, and it shows Palin's inability to deal with the harder questions because she chooses to focus on things like what someone said.

Put on your big girl panties, Sarah, and grow up. Quit hiding behind your children, and then complaining that others are saying things about your children.

109. A difficult situation.
Edited on Thu Feb-18-10 09:37 AM by Steerpike
Apparently The cognitively delayed girl in the cartoon was being witty when she said her mom was the former governor of alaska. And she was portrayed in a semi positive light. So Sarah was being fairly disingenuous regarding this situation...someone on another blog captured my feeling on the issue...here is a quote from their post...

“retard” falls into this category. It’s a word intended to belittle and denigrate–and like any of those words, it’s worst when it’s applied to someone who may see the word not as an insult, but as reality.

Having said that, though, I think that banning the word is about as futile as Prohibition was–someone once said that you can’t legislate morality. I think the same thing goes for respect. It’s something you either believe is important, or it’s not. Retard is an ugly word–but in the end, it’s just a word, and it speaks far more loudly about the person using it than it does about the person or ideas to whom it is applied."

I remember taking my daughter to the public playground for the first time and how the other kids and some of the parent treated her. She was isolated by the herd. She sat down in the sand all alone, and played by herself...in a playground crowded with a hundred children. My heart broke watching her. If you had a daughter or a child like her...yours would too.
