Professor Credited With Saving Lives in Amy Bishop's Alleged Rampage
Source: ABC News

Colleagues are touting a University of Alabama biochemistry professor with heroicallly saving lives during last week's campus shooting rampage.

"I believe that she acted very quickly to try and stop Dr. Bishop from shooting again," University of Alabama Huntsville president David Williams told "Good Morning America" today, adding that professor Debra Moriarity had asked him not to talk too much about her role in stopping Amy Bishop's alleged rampage that killed three and wounded three others. "It's just unbelievable that someone could act that way in such terrible circumstances."

-----

"Intense eyes, a set jaw," Moriarity told the Chronicle. As Moriarity, still on her hands and knees, looked up helplessly at her one-time friend, Bishop pulled the trigger. Click. She fired again. Click.

As Bishop stopped to reload, Moriarity and the others pushed Bishop out of the room and quickly barricaded the door with a table so Bishop couldn't reenter the room and resume shooting.

"Moriarity was probably the one that saved our lives. She was the one that initiated the rush," Ng told the Associated Press. "It took a lot of guts to just go up to her."

2. And Dr. Moriarity didn't use a gun. Imagine that!
Don't they want Arizona teachers to carry guns? They must all be well trained in small arms and have passed a background check. Ah huh. Good luck with that.

4. Too bad she didn't have one
She might not have had to wait for Amy Bishop to pause to reload.

6. Perhaps, but perhaps not. It is really hard to tell.

There is no way to idealize the situation one way or the other. We weren't there. It doesn't drive me crazy one way or the other about concealed weapons or even unconcealed ones. I do think it is difficult to assume a given outcome in any situation, or even this situation, with any given individual. Most of the time it just depends despite our personal bias or what some cute commercials would give us to believe.

Edited...can you believe I misspelled "one"? :eyes:

3. long-term planner
She planned this for a long time and went for practice at a shooting range weeks before she let loose on her colleagues. She borrowed the gun. And get this--her husband says she was thinking of buying the gun because....

"She was worried about crazy students," he said.

There is a pic of the house she lived in with her husband and family at this link.

5. Surely he knew about her gunning down her brother in 86
when she "borrowed" a gun, that should have sent off red flags and warning sirens in his head. And when she started going to a gun range to practice he should have acted.

9. Sounds like he was trying the gentle approach.
He told her that she couldn't keep the gun. He told her that she wasn't allowed to have the gun near the children or the home. He told her she wasn't allowed to take the gun to work.
