More money urged for DJJ

TALLAHASSEE - Looking to stem a months-long scandal over the death of a teenager in state custody, Gov. Jeb Bush told lawmakers Monday to use part of a $1.1 billion windfall to shore up the state's embattled juvenile justice agency.
The move comes in the midst of an embarrassing shake-up at the state's beleaguered Department of Juvenile Justice over the death of Omar Paisley, who was left to die of a burst appendix in Miami-Dade's juvenile lockup. The governor's handpicked agency chief took a leave, and the agency moved to fire more than a dozen employees.
''The Omar Paisley case illustrated a need for several improvements,'' said Jacob DiPietre, a spokesman for Bush. The governor asked lawmakers Monday to spend an additional $7.2 million on the state agency.

Inmate's skull fracture under inquiry
A Hollywood man remains hospitalized and partially paralyzed after his skull was fractured while he was in BSO custody. Authorities don't know who did it or why.

The Broward Sheriff's Office is trying to determine how an inmate suffered a fractured skull and almost died while in custody. Michael Shane Garner, 22, remains hospitalized at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale after undergoing emergency surgery and lapsing into a coma for 2 ½ weeks.
''What we have is a healthy kid being arrested and, who several hours later has a bashed skull,'' said Barry Roderman, attorney for the Garner family. ``We just want to know what happened to him. Did someone hit him? Kick him? We want to know what happened.''

There is video showing what appears to be a healthy Garner being turned over to deputies at the jail facility about 10 a.m., Hollywood police said.

His family received a call from the hospital telling them to prepare for the worst.
