Annan urges international cooperation in fight against terrorism

UNITED NATIONS, March 16 (Xinhuanet) -- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said here Tuesday that terrorism was not the only factor affecting elections in Spain, and Madrid bombings served to underscore the need for international cooperation in the fight against terror.

"Let me say that the events in Spain need to be looked at very critically," Annan said, responding to a question whether the recent Spanish elections has been affected by terrorism.

" "So there were lots of things at play," he said. "But I think what is important, and what this underscores, is that we need international cooperation, working across borders, to defeat and contain terrorism."

"We need to work together, share information, intelligence, work diplomatically and politically to contain terrorism. So I am a bit careful as to what conclusions I should draw from the Madridbombs," he said. Enditem �@
