Times OnlineA series of 'secret' telephone calls between Jack Straw and Colin Powell in the months before the war against of Iraq today became the focus of the official inquiry into Britain’s decision to join the American invasion.
Mr Straw, the former Foreign Secretary, said he would check records of his conversations with the US Secretary of State after it was suggested he had been warned that President George Bush would invade Iraq even if Saddam Hussein complied with United Nations weapons inspectors.
Details of the calls emerged after Mr Straw had defended his decision to reject the advice of his chief legal advisor that the war would be unlawful and to press the Attorney General to change his mind and give approval for the invasion.
The Iraq Inquiry announced today that it wanted to speak to members of President Bush’s administration as part of its investigation into the invasion and six year occupation of Iraq which led to the deaths of 179 British servicemen and women,
