U.S. soldier 'waterboarded his own daughter, 4, because she couldn't recite alphabet'
Source: Daily Mail

A U.S. soldier has been accused of 'waterboarding' his four-year-old daughter because she couldn't recite the alphabet.
Joshua Tabor admitted to police that he used the CIA torture technique because he was so angry.
As his daughter 'squirmed' to get away, Tabor said he submerged her face - upwards - three or four times until the water was lapping around her forehead and jawline.
Tabor, 27, admitted to investigators that his daughter was terrified of water and he had deliberately chosen the punishment.

Break

The practice of waterboarding has been used by the CIA to break Al Qaeda suspects at Guantanamo Bay and at secret prisons.
Detainees, including the mastermind of the 9/11 terror attacks Khalid Shaikh Mohammed had water poured over their face until they feared they were about the drown.
President Barack Obama has since outlawed the practice.
Tabor, a soldier at a base in Tacoma, Washington, flew into a rage after his daughter was unable to recite her ABC's.

1. Where was the mother?
If she is alive, she should get sole custody.

Knee jerking without getting info on context is not in a child's best interest either.

27. The mother is the one who called the police....................

http://www.seattlepi.com/local/6420ap_wa_dunking_daughter.html

The News Tribune of Tacoma reports his girlfriend called police to their home in Yelm Sunday because Tabor had dunked his daughter's head in the kitchen sink.

The child is now in custody of Child Protective Services. She had bruises on her back and scratch marks on her neck and told police, "Daddy did it."

Tabor was released from jail Monday after posting $10,000 bail and is restricted to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

The mother lives in Kansas. The girlfriend is not the mother. Tabor had been granted full custody of the child after his divorce which says to me the girl's mother might have some serious issues, too. :(

184. I know you're not excusing his behavior...
...but I'd just like to point out that many people who are drug addicts or alcoholics--don't abuse and
terrorize their children. Also, many people arrive home from war--and deal with even more traumatic
events--and they don't abuse their children. Furthermore, many people who are abused as children, do not
grow up to be abusers.

And lastly...many people raise children who are not their biological children (adoption, foster care) and
that doesn't cause most of them to be abusers.

I'd just like to point out that abusing a child in this horrific, deliberate, unconscionable way--is inexcusable.
No matter what a person has endured in their life (abuse, PTSD from war, stress, etc) there is NEVER, EVER any
excuse for doing this. Abusers should be punished to the full extent of the law, regardless of WHY they did it.

Abusing children is a choice.

Especially this abuse--which was well thought out, and took planning and a great deal of time to conduct. This
was torture.

Yeah, he won't be and I'm agruing the law should allow it. I'm just saying in this case that's what ought to happen. Anyone who thinks this kind of thing is ever acceptable, let alone on his own 4-yr.-old child, is never going to be fixed.

This shows some people who become parents are not qualified for the job, and still, just because they have sperm to impregnate a woman, they assume they are qualified parents?

This guy needs a year in prison, then something to knock down his ego, and teach him how to parent a child, and he should pay for his child's therapy for the rest of her life.

And what does "being able to roam loose" have to do with anything? If the mom who forced her son to kill his pet turns him into a deranged sociopath he won't be "roaming loose" for long. The mother in the hamster story and the dad in the OP are both unfit as parents.

215. I assume you've told him how sorry you are?
My father was verbally abusive, but the one thing that would have made a difference is if he had ever been able to say he was sorry. FWIW, I think that your ability to say that to your son means that your relationship will heal. Unfortunately, before it does you might have to put up with hearing some more anger from him.

190. Have you apologized?
I have sat in support groups for adults who were abused as children. The one thing
they crave is an apology and an admission from the parent that it was not their fault.

When children are young--they blame themselves for the treatment they get. The blame is
directly proportional to the harshness they received. It is a coping mechanism to blame
themselves. Blaming the parent is just too painful--because they are so dependent on the
parent. It's frightening to them. So, they grow up believing that they are stupid, bad
or worthless and they hold onto those beliefs--to survive.

Even if your kids are grown--they need to hear that you were wrong, that you are sorry and
that what happened to them was not their fault. It is the first step in their own healing.

To heal, the adult must begin to erase all of the "I'm not worthy" messages. They can do it
on their own--without an apology or admission from the parent. But it takes years. Believe me,
I've seen it.

I can't tell you how valuable an apology and admission is--and how healing it is to hear, "It was not your fault.
You were good and wonderful...I was just impatient and made bad decisions."

You may have made mistakes in the past, but you can help to heal your son and yourself--by doing this,
if you haven't all ready.

I wish you the best. We all make mistakes as parents.

191. Apology can lead to forgiveness, and the combination is a very powerful healing force.
I know a situation where a woman was viciously abused over a long period at a very early age. She didn't even remember it until the abuser died, so there is no possibility of a face to face reconciliation. She is working so hard to heal herself with forgiveness, awareness and compassion, but how much easier would the path have been if she had been able to hear him say, "I'm sorry for what I did. It wasn't your fault."

And now the PTSD and the insanity will be forced out on our society - the kids and spouses of these people enduring the torture and the abuse, also road rage, the suicides.

But whatever happens, as a nation, let's make sure that we never give PEACE a chance, cuz peace is only for wimpy nations.

202. Thank you. I've had a long time to think abt this one.
My first husband had one tour of duty in Vietnam.

A simple but talented and intelligent soul, of the many people I have known, he was the least angry of all of us. And during his tour, he never had to kill anyone - he was in an engineering platoon and built things like bridges.

But he had PTSD rages that could be set off by minor things - a flash of cop car lights through our windows, loud noises, etc.

One minute we'd be having tea and talking about our love for each other, and the next thing was, I'd be thrown across the room while he was in black out mode.

Doctors knew nothing about brain chemistry and brain functioning then. But they know a lot now.

But the easiest way to deal with the PTSD problem is to not send people over to kill other people.

Children are so vulnerable. I recall a case when I was living in San Antonio--a woman punished her daughter by tethering her to the bed and forcing her to eat jalapeno peppers when she back-talked her. She tried to excuse it by saying jalapeno peppers were part of her culture, but she was still charged and convicted of child abuse.

Wartime creates conditions that strip away the thin veneer of civilization, and that's why I always consider war to be a LAST resort - as opposed to the neocons who view war as the solution everything.

abused by a parent or parent figure (mom's live in bf who's been around since the kid was an infant, for example). After they've been separated from the parent, most kids want very much to see the parent, at least when the kid is as young as 4. The parent has been the source of survival for the kid, the one souce of good things, as well as bad things.

It's like every dysfunctional relationship you've had in your life rolled up into one, then raised to the tenth power. The kid often accepts that it is his or her fault, and if they could just do better.....

The hope that it will finally be better next time is powerful.

And(horribly)you might even think it was YOUR fault if it was done to you.

I hope that's not the case with this child, but she needs a lot of counselling to recover from this.

abusive. you don't wake up one day and decide to waterboard a 4 year old who fears water for not being able to recite the alphabet--and I wonder how she got her fear of water in the first place?

20. It does appear in a local paper too
They use his full name:

A man is accused of holding his 4-year-old daughter's head under the water in the kitchen sink at their Yelm home Sunday night because she would not recite the alphabet, according to police and court papers.

The Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office filed a charge of second-degree assault of a child against Joshua Ryan Tabor, 27, on Tuesday. His arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 16.

174. And thanks to them...actually Enlightenment is right to be sceptical about info from the Daily Mail
That newspaper is run by the British versions of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, plus an element of Tom Tancredo, with a bit of pure sensationalism mixed in. The paper has verious nicknames in Britain: Hate-Mail, Daily Hate, Daily Heil, Daily Fail and Daily Lie.

But sometimes they happen to pull something from a valid source, as seems to be the case here.

They are not what they once were. The Army Times, however, simply wouldn't cover this story at all if there were not something to it. If they cover a story such as this one that shows that all is not goodness and light, then you know it's not simply fictional.

15. Sad
It's sad that a very stupid war based on lies and propaganda would be the reason this terror was inflicted on this child by her father. Growing up, the phrase; "Wow, that's going to mess up her head a long time" is the way my lazy mind wants to put this.

Americans cannot comprehend the horror that is war. And they cannot connect our war to the violence inflicted on this innocent child.

I met a stripper who told me her boyfriend is back from Iraq and cannot remember anything longer than thirty minutes!

All this human sacrifice and what good did this war do anybody, besides the military industrial congressional complex?

208. I know two WWII vets who came back and were "never themselves" again.
Their wives supported the families and tried to make the best life they could or their families.

People didn't talk to much about it other than to say how smart the one used to be and what a go-getter he was when he was in high school. And they said that the other one had a great personality and that "everyone like to be around him" when he was in high school.

I don't know the details about their service or what they encountered. I know that they were broken men.

The chances are very good that he's like every abusive father who hasn't been to war: A bully and a tyrant who resorts to violence to get his way.

If he's never done such a thing before, then yeah, it's the result of the war. HOWEVER, if he's been violent before going to war, then it's just something inside him. :(

80. I certainly do not disagree. One way to help reduce domestic violence is to stop sending our young
people to kill in foreign countries. Three children die every day as a result of our occupation of Afghanistan. These soldiers must return home and be normal. That's a lot to ask. Stop unnecessary wars.

It would also help greatly if our vets got better treatment for PTSD.

214. Rare? Sometimes I wonder.
I come from an upper middle-class, university-educated family. We're not trailer trash. Nevertheless...

A male partner of one of my in-laws has an absolutely horrific history of merciless abuse at the hands of his step-father, including beatings, captivity and psychological torture, throughout his childhood and teenage years. A woman I know very well was continuously sexually abused from the age of two to 15, by two adult family members in sequence. I was at a party once where all of the five women had experienced one or more of sexual abuse, sexual assault or outright rape. A female family member of mine was drugged and raped by one of her room-mate's friends, and when he was done he left the condom inside her to find when she came to.

What is wrong with us? Is it our gender, our genetics, our culture, what?

46. Oh my God. How could someone do that to a child?
I have two children and can honestly say I only lost it with my son once when he was about that age. I gave him about 4 wacks on the bottom, and not that hard. My husband was out of town at the time, and my son had plucked my last nerve. Afterwards, I was so wracked with guilt, I called my husband in tears. I do understand getting angry, and even losing your temper, but to do something cruel and hurtful is beyond my comprehension. And to get angry because a 4 year old can't recite the alphabet is just ridiculous.

Abusive parents have been known to use both fire and water to "punish" and "teach" their little ones; the only thing new is the name.

Unless he can be proven to be suffering from PTSD, there are no excuses for this sorry SOB. And even if he does have PTSD, this behavior is pretty much a deal-breaker in parenting, in my book.

211. Not necisarily, it could just be regular old child abuse.
Let's not pretend we know what caused this until we have something to base it on. Sure it could be the guy has PTSD... could be he never experienced anything worse than a drill instructor. Could be he was abused as a child... could be not.
Why make unfounded assumptions.

What criteria were you using? Really, I mean, was the mother SUCH a bad risk that it was clear a monster like this got dibs over this child? The fucking alphabet?

Did daddy ever have a diagnosis of post traumatic stress after two theaters of the kind of wars we've been sending people to. I believe after a while, some of the cease to be people any more.

I hope this puts your judicial nuts in a vise. Jesus Christ, what kind of society are we creating where everything you see in the theater or video game is filled with unjustified violence.

102. Here is an article with more detail about what he and his girlfriend did.
http://www.thenewstribune.com/partners/theolympian/story/1054799.html

Tabor spoke to a Yelm police officer and said that he and his girlfriend had “held her down on the counter and submerged her head into the water three or four times until the water came around her forehead and jawline.” He said that she was face-up when her head was in the water. He added that they gave this punishment for the 4-year-old “refusing to say her letters.”

Tabor told police that his daughter is afraid of water “and was squirming around trying to get away from the water. Joshua did not act as though he felt there was anything wrong with this form of punishment.”

<snip>

It might not be waterboarding but it's definitely torture.

you have no idea.
Both are partially drowning the victim and making them think they are dying..and causing them to choke and gag and vomit etc because of the water as well.
They are both torture.

And, in my opinion, should never have custody of his daughter again.

But I think it may be reading too much into it- and giving him too much credit- to assume that he did this because he had somehow been convinced that it "wasn't torture." He knows it's torture, whatever Cheney or anybody else says. You know it's torture. I know it's torture. Whether or not to use it is a question to argue- what it truly is, though, is clear to everyone.

This guy is a douchebag child abuser. Did war make him that way? Maybe. If he'd never heard of waterboarding, though, I'll bet you he'd have done something else fucked up and sadistic- maybe tied her to a chair in the closet and left her until she "remembered" the alphabet?

My point here is that he knew what he was doing. He didn't think it was ok; he fucking snapped and did something that he knows is fucked up.

Get him therapy, meds, whatever he needs (mostly time and counseling, in my opinion); don't let him around his kid anymore until she's 18 and can decide for herself.

Don't, though....don't give this guy a pass and pretend he didn't know it was wrong because he's been told waterboarding isn't torture.

Just my .02, of course.

For every one of these incidents that make it to light probably thousands more go unreported and unnoticed. Military life makes people mean and keeps them angry. I believe for many people, just the trauma and abuse suffered in boot camp can be sufficient to induce PTSD.

193. I disagree, and I'm currently in the military and grew up in an Army family
I'm an Army brat, and currently an Air Force officer. Growing up in a military family, and then being in the military, does not make you "mean" and keep you "angry".

I went through Army basic training, Army Warrant Officer Candidate School, and then Air Force Officer Training School. I do not have PTSD. Anyone who claims that would probably break down and get PTSD if they had a boss in any civilian job hurt their feelings. Please...that's a bunch of BS.

I've known many military families very well all my life. I've only known one instance where the father was abusive, and honestly, he would have probably been abusive regardless of his career choice. Most of my friends grew up normal lives, and were not abused or neglected. In fact, other than my parents divorcing when I was in high school, my childhood was pretty great.

My two sons aren't abused or neglected either. They are growing up just fine.

219. Perhaps they do, but you'd think in 37 years of living in and around the military
I'd notice that this guy's behavior "wasn't too far outside the norm"...in fact this guy's behavior was well outside the norm. I've known many, many military families as both a dependent and a member of the military all my life, and from the perspective of two branches (Air Force and Army). I can't speak for the Navy/Marines but I'd be willing to bet it isn't much different. I think if the concept of military fathers drowning and beating their family members wasn't "too far outside the norm" I would have noticed and/or known many families that were dysfunctional and abusive. I only knew one that was what I'd call abusive, and a few that had some odd dysfunctional behaviors. But for the most part, most military families are pretty normal (with regard to non-military families).

The poster who made that comment said people who serve in the military are always angry and mean, but that's not the case. Again, all my coworkers, most of my friends, and many, many others that I come into contact with every day are military or military dependents. I'd be one to know if they were always "angry and mean".

Prov 19:18: "Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying."
Prov 22:15: "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him."
Prov 23:13: "Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die."
Prov 23:14: "Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell (Shoel)."
Prov 29:15: "The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame."
Hebrews 12:6-7: "...the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son. Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?"

It doesn't mention waterboarding, but I am sure that in some of the lost books of the bible God said "Dunk the little shit you want, just don't drown the little fucker."

This guy should be put away and never see the light of day. But the entire Conservative establishment has made water boarding a virtue and this is what comes out of false virtue.

195. This is why Bush, Cheney and the rest of their ilk need to be prosecuted NOW!!!
Not that it would deter this malefactor, but it would send a clear signal that THIS BEHAVIOR IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!

216. I don't see the political connection...
1) The guy wasn't "waterboarding" his child...he was attempting to drown her.

2) This guy apparently never deployed, and was likely a violent person before joining the military. Simply joining the military doesn't make a person violent.

3) The only way you could draw a political connection was if the guy was actually waterboarding his daughter and stated that he though it was ok because the government did it. But he didn't do either of those things.

This guy is very simply an abusive father, period. The fact that he is in the military is likely circumstantial...he could very well have been any other profession, the result would be the same. Years of abuse, neglect or some other issue makes people abusive to their family members, not joining the military.

197. Support our troops
This is the legacy of Dick Cheney.
Who is tied for second place with Newt Gingrich for GOP 2012 President.
Making front runner Sarah Palin look good!

201. This is an instance of one guy abusing his child...it's not indicative of anything
In fact, the term "waterboarding" his daughter is inaccurate, because what he did wasn't waterboarding. He very nearly threatened to drown her, which is quite different from waterboarding, which only gives someone the sensation of drowning.

Yes, there are people in the military that have mental and emotional problems and probably need to seek help, and those that don't have abused their children and spouses. But there are people like this in ever walk of life in our country. As much as I dislike Cheney and others in the previous administration, it's a stretch to tie this one soldier's rage problem to the administration. For every guy like this, there are thousands of other military personnel that DON'T abuse their families.

210. I thought waterboarding was used to get people to divulge information
that they didn't want to give up, not as a form of punishment? Did this first class A-hole think his daughter knew the alphabet and just didn't want to tell him? A sad situation, I hope this guy sees some jail time and is not allowed unsupervised contact with his daughter anymore.
