Civil rights icon Joseph Lowery admitted to hospitalBy Ty Tagami and Ernie Suggs

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

12:07 a.m. Monday, February 1, 2010

Famed civil rights leader and Atlanta legend Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery has been admitted to a hospital intensive care unit, but friends say his condition is not serious.

Lowery, who last summer received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honor, was scheduled to attend an African American achievement award ceremony Saturday, but didn't make it, longtime friend and fellow civil rights leader Andrew Young told the AJC late Sunday.

"He was having shortness of breath, and he didn't come to the Trumpet Awards last night," Young said, adding that Lowery "has been in and out of the hospital before. I have not heard that it was serious. I think he was having some respiratory problems."

David Stokes, another friend, said Lowery was admitted to Emory University Hospital Midtown Saturday and was placed in an intensive care unit as a precaution. "But he's better, and he's going home" Monday, Stokes said.

The 88-year-old Lowery was a co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the signature civil rights group originally headed by Martin Luther King, Jr. Lowery was its president from 1977 to 1997. Last year, Lowery spoke at the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Stokes, who was the SCLC spokesman when Lowery was president, said the last time he remembers Lowery being admitted to a hospital was when his blood pressure dropped a year ago after preaching a sermon. It wasn't serious that time either, Stokes said.

Lowery got so absorbed in preaching that he forgot to eat, Stokes said.

1. I worry about the passing of America's octogenerians
Joseph Lowery is still with us, as is Helen Thomas. But we just lost Howard Zinn.
I worry about the passing of America's octogenarians because they seem to understand, far better than Americans of a later era, the importance and promise of American democracy. More importantly, they seem altogether unafraid to speak up when they detect injustice. This impulse toward dissent should be a foundation of modern American life, but for some reason (I'll bet my money on influence from the corporate media), it no longer is.

2. It seems to me
that people are making it a personal mission to show their dissent of Obama's establishment. Many don't want to equate that dissent with the dissent of the aforementioned people, because it doesn't fir their politics. Dissent is alive and well, it simply has a new face.

5. If totally misdirected
The cowards should have stood up (not the octegenarians) when booshflush was installed in the White House unlawfully I mean the regular american sheeple. Instead of calling me anti american for standing up and saying that it was a stolen election and the reasons why. Then there's that Sodam Insane WMD bullshit. His Son in law stood up went into exile in the US and stated the weapons were destroyed at his order. which seems to be the major reason he fled. Then there is the fact that those Chemical weapons were sold or given to SH by poppy bush and his criminal buttbuddies.
Not that I am defending Pres O who has fallen into line with the criminal corpse but the problems did not start with him. They started long ago with the Bush family cabal and friends.
