Anne Frank diary guardian Miep Gies dies aged 100
Source: BBC

Miep Gies, the last surviving member of the group who helped protect Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis, has died in the Netherlands aged 100.

She and other employees of Anne Frank's father Otto supplied food to the family as they hid in a secret annex above the business premises in Amsterdam.

Anne's diary of their life in hiding, which ended in betrayal, is one of the most famous records of the Holocaust.

Mrs Gies died in a nursing home after suffering a fall at Christmas.

Speaking last year as she celebrated her 100th birthday, Mrs Gies played down her role, saying others had done far more to protect Jews in the Netherlands.

11. RIP Miep Gies
If you ever get the chance, visit Anne Frank house. I doubt that there is anything that can prepare you for the experience of actually being in the house, feeling the history. My girlfriend and I left the house after the tour and probably didn't speak for 15 minutes after. What can you say, how do you speak to something so beautiful, yet so tragic. The optimism of young Anne, the heroism of Miep Gies, the horror of the betrayal.

Writing this makes me think I can't even come close to the experience of being there.

25. RIP Ms. Gies , you showed great courage duing a time of
one of the most tragic events in human history. You were a witness to tie depths of depravity humanity can fall too, you stood form when others fell to their knees in subservience, or worse, aided those that murdered innocent people.

If indeed there is a heaven, you have earned your wings...I, as a part of humanity sincerely thank you.

30. I had the great opportunity to her her speak in Fresno, CA many years ago
She must have been in her 80's. She was so down to earth.
She told us of Anne, and the family and what they did to hide the family. Very incredible.

and when asked why did she risk her and her husband's life.. she said "how could I not ?"

It is a miracle she and her husband where not executed.

Thanks so much for sharing your encounter with her.

Years ago, I visited the Anne Frank house & museum and was overwhelmed from the moment I stepped past the bookcase door into the rooms.

Your bravery, heroism, courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. You were one of my heroes growing up, firstly when I read the Diary of Anne Frank and then secondly when I read your memoirs.

May you all be reunited in the next life. My deepest, sincerest and most heartfelt thoughts, prayers, condolences and sympathies go out to Miep's family and friends. An angel has left this earth

35. The world is fortunate to have had Miep Gies and others like her walk this earth with us...
Edited on Tue Jan-12-10 11:41 AM by Hekate
Her generation is passing from us swiftly, but I have met a few, including the mother of a man I've known for many years. He still speaks with a pronounced Dutch accent, and is a successful builder in our area. Someone from the local Jewish congregation discovered that there were Holocaust survivors here who remembered very well the name of the woman who hid them. If it hadn't been for the publicity about the ceremony to honor her, Mr. H never would have known -- Franks says he was just a child at the time, and the profound import of what his mother was doing simply didn't sink in until much later. The people she rescued had children and they had children, thus there is a saying that someone who saves the life of one person, it is as if they saved a whole world.

I was about Anne Frank's age when I read her "Diary" and was incredibly moved. As we all do, I wondered if I would have the courage of the Franks and their protectors if I ever had cause to...

Rest with the angels, Miep Gies.

Hekate
