Party chief(Steele): Republicans 'screwed up' after Reagan
Source: USA Today/AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele offers a simple explanation for why the party all too often lost touch with typical Americans since the Ronald Reagan era: "We screwed up," he claims in a new book offering a blueprint for the party's resurgence.

That "we" includes the last two Republican presidents, George W. Bush and his father, George H.W. Bush, and the most recent Republican candidate for president, Sen. John McCain.

In Right Now: A 12-Step Program for Defeating the Obama Agenda, released Monday by Regnery Publishing, Steele says the conservative party should acknowledge where "we most glaringly compromised our principles" in the past decade and hold its elected officials accountable.

"We must support Republican officials who assert these principles," he writes. "When elected Republicans vote against Republican principles, the voters must withhold their support — withhold it vigorously and consistently."

Surprise, surprise, more Regnery toilet paper.

1. Well, let's see, what exactly is he talking about?
Is it the disastrous tax-cuts that stalled economic progress and job creation? Was it the blatant corruption of the Bush administration? Was it the preoccupation with what people were fiddling while the country burns? Huh, Michael, maybe you could just narrow it down a little bit how the Republican Party lost touch with typical Americans? I wonder...

5. They royally screwed up under Reagan.
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 11:46 AM by burning rain
The one time they recently showed themselves at all capable of being part of responsible government was when they held a congressional majority under Bill Clinton from 1995-2001. That relative success, however, was contingent: it did not flow from their principles. Bubba was there to keep them from enacting their hearts' desire of budget-busting supply-side tax-cuts and mammoth "defense" spending. What tax cuts there were, were sane, like the $500-per-child tax credit. Despite the GOP's mad zeal to launch persecutorial "investigations" of anything and everything Clinton, and the rest of their follies, they can at least claim a share in getting us to a budget surplus in the Clinton years, but that was contingent on having a Democratic president over them to keep their worst fiscal impulses in check, as their disastrous fiscal performance under George W. Bush showed.

11. Yet they impeached Clinton and didn't impeach war criminal bush!
The Repuke party is such an evil disaster for America that it goes beyond treason. There is NOTHING ever good about a Republican! They can do nothing but evil.

13. All I'm saying is the dynamic between them & Bubba helped lead to a balanced budget.
It wasn't due to any virtue on the congressional GOP's part; they had and have no virtue.
