Al Qaeda wing says will avenge Yemen raids: web
Source: reuters

DUBAI (Reuters) – Al Qaeda's wing in Yemen said it would take revenge over raids against the group this month, which it said were carried out by U.S. jets and killed about 50 men, women and children, in an Internet statement on Sunday.

The statement, dated December 20, appeared on Islamist websites shortly after U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Washington was investigating whether al Qaeda was involved in a Christmas Day attempt to blow up a passenger jet.

"We will not let Muslim women and children's blood be spilled without taking revenge," Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula said in the statement.
...
The New York Times has said the United States gave military hardware, intelligence and other support to Yemeni forces to carry out the raids.

1. I think everyone has put 2 and 2 together and worries that the plane bomber was retaliation.

4. Had already been discussed
as such on UK tv news the day it occured - probably blowback. Would you expect otherwise ?

Its no different from school days really - you piss people enough off they retaliate.

They kill us. We are all somebody's meatpuppet.

21. I tend to think that's a naive conclusion, considering how
the United States was already being attacked by al-Qaeda in Yemen long before these airstrikes occured. Frankly, at a certain point, you need to stop swallowing al-Qaeda's statements whole and recognize that they would have been launching attacks against our citizens whether these airstrikes occured or not.

The British should know better too, considering how an attack on their embassy was thwarted in the recent raids on al-Qaeda camps in Yemen.

19. I wish you were right, but I don't think that people have put 2 and 2 together.
It clearly was retaliation.

We have missile strikes reportedly killing children and within days we have the plane bomber from Yemen.

timeforpeace, I wish the American people could see the connection. I just don't think they will.

22. The implication of your post is that if these airstrikes hadn't occured
the U.S. wouldn't have been targeted in an attack. Frankly, that's a joke. If they weren't using the airstrikes as an excuse, they'd be using something else.

32. As I've explained, your assertion is faulty.
America was targeted by al-Qaeda in Yemen long before these airstrikes occured. While you sit here insisting "2 + 2 = 4" the fact of the matter is that you're trying to tell us that 2 + 2 = 5...

2. And so it continues
The cause precedes the effect, which itself becomes a cause...

A bomb is an amazing thing:
You build one
You use one
You create a market for more of them
And that is good for the economy

6. They certainly will avenge themselves...
like, they could fly fuel-laden planes into buildings and...oh, wait. Nevermind.

I guess they'll now switch to double, super-secret full retaliation mode now? :eyes:

8. It's just coincidence
I would think Al Qaeda could come up with a more full proof plan than hoping a man on a terrorist list could walk through an airport with liquid explosives strapped to him and pray that it goes off in flight. He got through because of luck and incompetence, and ultimately failed for the same reason. Maybe I'm thinking they're smarter then they are, but I don't think they plan as poorly as that.

9. Yes, it is difficult to believe the masterminds of 911
could be responsible for this circus. Perhaps the goal was not destruction of the plane. Could it be that they've discovered that fear and paranoia are just as effective as behaviour modification even when little or no physical damage is done?

10. faulty gear.
had a proper cap fired in that compound it would have caused significant damage or destroyed the plane.

Just like the shoe asshole a bit of dumb luck saved lots of lives.

12. We're sure it wasn't an incompetent operative?
Still, it's forced some onerous security measures into effect - like, no bathroom visits for an hour before landing? That's going to make for some miserable passengers.

Eventually we'll reach the point where anyone travelling on a plane will be forced to strip and surrender all clothing, then don airline-issued paper garments after submitting to a full body cavity search (or a full body scan), before boarding the plane. Disembarking would be equally unpleasant.

And even then, some clever freedom fighter (or, more likely, his or her handlers) will come up with a way to ingest the damned bomb and carry a surgically implanted remote for it.

:(

no bathroom rule. No security changes. Pretty hard to mess up firing a blasting cap. Sounds like he had an HE and no cap to fire it.

14. Not that I"m complaining, but...
it would be SO EASY to do an even more far-reaching act of terrorism without so much as a firecracker or the smallest caliber gun. Does make you wonder about any true "masterminds" behind the attempts to strike fear. It's almost like they're fixated on disrupting modes of travel, and so can't devise something else.

Of course, already the Rethugs are beating the fear drums to make Ma Smith of Backwater, South Dakota feel certain that there's sabre-bearing muslims streaking for her door at this very moment! So I guess even a bungler like this latest wanna-be IS effective in that sense. Gotta be tough, realizin' you've been denied your reward of virgins when all you really got was your crotch cooked!

20. I don't know about that.
Stuff like this is about equally effective.

The goal was never really to destroy us physically. It was to scare the shit out of us so we'd spend ourselves into bankruptcy trying to be safe.

And already we have people screaming for the shredding of what remains of the constitution and more endless wars.
So if it was Al Qaeda, looks like it was pretty effective, even if it wasn't as effective as they'd have liked.

23. One needn't look further than the suicide blasts in Pakistan
to see just how much radical groups like al-Qaeda truly care about the blood of innocent Muslims being spilled. This is merely propaganda, capitalizing on the moment. What's sad is that there are people on this board who can't see it for what it is.

24. As if it's truly that simple?
Americans were being killed by al-Qaeda in Yemen long before these airstrikes occured and would have continued being targeted by them even if they hadn't. Pretending otherwise is ridiculous.

Justify that.

I would hope that we are better than Al-Quaeda. We are Americans.
