Berkeley sends wire hangers to politicians

The city of Berkeley mailed coat hangers to 20 members of Congress today in protest of the anti-abortion amendment in version of the federal health care bill.

The City Council approved the action 7-1 on Tuesday night. Councilman Gordon Wozniak dissented; Mayor Tom Bates was absent.

Metal coat hangers were mailed with a protest letter to members of the House of Representatives who voted in favor of the amendment but have a history of supporting abortion rights.

... "The city of Berkeley is sending you this coat hanger as a symbol of the horrible pain and suffering endured by women as a result of years of anti-choice policies imposed by our government," the letter reads. "We have never sent a coat hanger to anyone before."

12. I lost a friend in high school....
to a botched abortion. Once you have experienced that tragedy-all the pro life arguments ring hollow. It isn't about life, it's about power, power over a woman. These predominantly old men need to keep their hands off my daughter's uterus. I experienced that option and she should have freedom of choice too. My life was the better for it.

16. Here is what I was reffering to!
A scene from the infamous Joan Crawford biopic "Mommy Dearest." On a side note, me and my sister use to say to our mother all the time for a laugh, "No mommy dearest, no!"

Berkeley sends wire hangers to politicians

(12-09) 17:22 PST BERKELEY -- The city of Berkeley mailed coat hangers to 20 members of Congress today in protest of the anti-abortion amendment in version of the federal health care bill.

The amendment would ban coverage of abortion for those who would receive government-run health insurance. It would also forbid people from choosing a private plan that covers abortion if they receive federal subsidies to pay for the insurance.

10. Hmmm....
I understand the shock value factor here....

But isnt the whole "coat hanger" thing what we are trying to avoid as far as public perception? Doesnt it take away the fact that it is a medical procedure like any other?

Maybe im just getting old :P

11. Women will always get abortions.....if they are
not safe and legal, this will take us back to the deaths of women who used the coat hanger.

And just when did women lose their freedom and liberty? Why are our lives controlled?

Men are not going to give up their power over women's lives without ANOTHER fight. Hope the youth is up to the fight. It's their turn now.

15. Which other medical procedure have lawmakers forced women to perform on themselves?
Which other medical procedure is supposed to be constitutionally protected?
