Chavez: Venezuela acquires thousands of missiles
Source: ap

CARACAS, Venezuela – President Hugo Chavez said Monday that Venezuela has received thousands of Russian-made missiles and rocket launchers as part of his government's military preparations for a possible armed conflict with neighboring Colombia.

"They are preparing a war against us," Chavez said during a televised address, repeating a charge he has been making for months. "Preparing is one of the best ways to neutralize it."

Both Colombia and Washington deny having any plans to attack Venezuela, but Chavez argues they are plotting together a military offensive against Venezuela. Chavez says his government is acquiring more weapons as a precaution.

"Thousands of missiles are arriving," Chavez said. The former paratrooper-turned-president did not specify what type of missiles, but said Venezuela's growing arsenal includes Russian-made Igla-1S surface-to-air missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.

5. If there is another coup attempt he is going to fire missiles?
What is he going to shoot at, the presidential palace? He doesn't need those missiles. If he wants to fight off another coup attempt, he needs a strong loyal army that would put down any revolt, but that would be done with rifles, not missiles. Militarism is wrong headed and counter productive, whether it's carried out by a government of the right or of the left. I wonder how many schools and hospitals he could build with the money he is spending on those unneeded weapons.

37. No, but since the United States wants him out of office
and is having themselves a little buildup right across his border, he's just being prudent. And Chavez is about the last Latin America leader you can fault on social spending.

27. After plotting his own coup, do you blame him.
He's military, through and through, and thinks of buying guns as the best solution.

Not sure how much that'll do for stability in the region, though.

6. He needs to be licensing production – not purchasing.
He needs local production for surface to air shoulder controlled systems, surface to surface anti-tank systems (Russians make an excellent model), he needs local production on the latest RPG devices.

Don’t buy. Purchase a license to produce!

Those are the weapons to be manufacturing. Those are the weapons that could defeat an invasion by a hegemonic power. Tanks and all that are almost pointless.

53. Local production gives local control.
Never rely on a freighter crossing the high seas!

Buy the license, build the factories and produce to the license specs.

Ground to air missiles, ground to ground anti-tank missiles, RPG (under any definition) are not weapons of aggression. They are weapons of defense.

Manufacture the current AK & RPD infantry designs at the local level.

The out come will be a nation that is this century’s version of:

“Don’t go there”!

“Beware”!

“A rifle behind ever blade of grass”!

29. It not just the spending its what its being spent on
Columbia's anti narcotics efforts are lead by their military. That inflates their spending. Look also at their equipment fielded and equipment on order such as small arms, aircraft, and armor.

Other articles indicate that the Jane's numbers are lagging what is reported in their other report (Janes Defence Weekly etc)

excluding the expense of the current wars. And that is considered obscene here despite the fact the US protects much of the free world.

Chavez flat out said he is preparing for war. Never thought I would hear a progressive defend defense
spending to prepare for a war that should be avoided. Methinks Chavez is going to do a Bush:
Warmongering by whipping up the population for war so he he can start a fracas with Columbia to get its oil. Need a lot of oil to pay for socialism.

and this is not personal to Obama at all.

Right now, now, they are backing the results of a patently fraudulent election in Honduras while the bodies of Hondurans killed by the coup forces are littering the highways.

Look at this:

Honduran Youth under Attack
Morgues are filled with bodies of young men, Honduran state refuses to investigate

by Dawn Paley →Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA – Fifteen youth were killed in violent attacks last weekend in the Honduran capital, including five young men who were massacred on a street corner.

“We are in a very difficult moment here in Honduras, and a terror is being instilled in citizens,” said the father of one of the deceased at his wake this afternoon. He said his son may have participated in a march against the June 28 coup d'état, but insisted that he was not a political activist.

The five men killed were Isaac Enrique Coello Soto, 24, Roger Andrés Reyes Aguilar, 22, Kenneth José Rosa, 23, Gabriel Parrales Zelaya, 34, and Marcos Vinicio Matute Escobar, 39.

The massacre was carried out by masked men who stepped out of an unmarked Nissan and opened fire in the Villanueva neighbourhood on the outskirts of Tegucigalpa. Locals claim the gunman were wearing military uniforms.

17. Not good or bad really.
I think the main reason Latin America is doing OK, with emerging socialist democracies, is because the U.S. is busy elsewhere, bringing "democracy" to other parts of the world.

Columbia is a U.S. puppet state similar to Israel the ME. They both do our bidding. Perhaps in the case of Israel it is we who do their bidding.

I think a little military deterrent is a good thing, for defense purposes. Bottom line, they have oil and we wants it.

very "Cable TV".

Is there ANYONE left in this whole Godforsaken empire who can think in anything OTHER than Cable TV Binary Stupid?

Yes/no, 1/0: these are the only answers that exist in Cable TV Binary Stupid.

Like saying that because a person asserts what Walt & Mearshimer did in their academic report or that hundreds of thousands of people see occurring with the Israel Lobby and it's very disproportionate influence on US policymaking, they must believe that "Jooooows control our government"?

Good Lord above, am I sick and tired of Cable TV Binary Stupid! Left, Right, Up Down, all political stripes have one thing in common: we all think in Cable TV Binary Stupid now, which makes us the one of the most pliant, mentally and morally anesthteized populaces in all the world.

The only question remaining is, are you being intentionally obtuse in order to make your ridicuolous ad hominem, or are you actually incapable in thinking in anything other than Cable TV Binary Stupid?

If the latter, you are not alone. Not even close.

The dumbing down of America is complete when hardly anyone can remember how to think and speak in other than Cable TV Binary Stupid.

What I wouldn't give for a nice lobotomy to help me forget the things I have learned in the last 10 years.

Yeah, Israel has a powerful lobby but I don't think as the previous posters states, "we do their bidding".

I was snarking at another poster's inane comments. As you obviously know, it's a popular pastime here on DU. Perhaps I was hoping he'd expand on his statement or maybe I just looking for an argument.

But yeah, you're right. I'm part of Dumb America. I'm incapable alternate ideas, compromise or critical evaluation of my views or the views of others.

Edited on Tue Dec-08-09 05:57 PM by tom_paine
I am as stupid as any other person. Our stupidities lie in different areas, that's all.

Yours is so usual and ho-hum "attack the messenger" bullshit it becomes clearer and clearer that my initial asseseement was correct. Even the quality of your insults are weak and juvenile.

Funny thing is, I don't think I am better than anyone else, not even close. All people have their strengths and weaknesses, their stupid and smart places.

The trick is to know where you're stupid and where you're smart. You wouldn't know about that.

So snark and sneer. Attack me in that effete "concern troll" fashion. Do as you like. You know and I know and anyone reading this thread knows what you said and now you compound it with a lie and a goofy ad hominem that is so old and unoriginal you must have coughed dry dust while you were typing it.

May I say that, if you stop thinking in Binary Stupid, you might be able to come up with some original material.

Boring and old, you're not even good at insulting.

I know intelligent fifth graders who could do much better.

Nice try, though. (I'm lying, it was very poor and plagarized) Sad and pathetic for you, but quite enjoyable for me. (that part is true)

Wanna try again? Can you dig deep inside and come up with something original? You can do it. Get the ol' brainpan revved up and go for it.

But as insults go, I give you a D- for an embarrasing lack of originality. Can you do better? Give 'er another shot, Kreme Puff.

But the power of your words. I must print them out, the effort and smugness, oh they reach off the page and smack the reader with a scented glove.

I breathe with the relief of how easily I got off. How the asylums must be filled with those whom you've driven mad with your words.

I go forward a better man, after my encounter with such a.....titan.

59. That's a little better insulting. Still snarky and concern trolling, but at least a little original
Edited on Wed Dec-09-09 10:48 AM by tom_paine
Still, don't you think using the same template of me thinking I'm so great, and your shower of juvenile sarcasm, is a bit trite and hackneyed?

Just keeping with the original theme? Still, it does show consistency.

Thanks again for the amusing interlude, the simple fact that you are stuck in concern troll mushmouth is enjoyable to read.

Personally, such weaselly, oily fake concern trolling is not for me. I prefer the frontal assault in all things, the weak coward's smarm I leave to others. Despite your improvement, your sarcasm is still very weak cookie-cutter stuff, and that remains as unoriginal and boring as you ever have been, but you gave it a shot and for that you should be proud.

Wanna try again? Can you take concern trolling and greasy smarm to the next level? I know you can if you but try.

You're still boring and trite, concern trolling tactics and smarmy fakery well within the grasp of teenagers, but I see movement and some attempt to better yourself.

C'mon, keep going! This is fun! Oil me down with your smarm like a bodybuilder! Tell me how great I am again! Surely your eighth-grade sarcasm is going right over my head, surely you have demostrated to everyone reading that you have a much better grasp than I of...eight-grade smarm.

Your turn. I know you can keep moving forward to something original, if you but try.

73. The agony! The pain of of it all!
How shall I ever survive these attacks? I wondered long and hard and I went to my local bookstore to pick up a large and repetitive tome of your rhetoric. But alas, I could not find any copies. I searched through philosophy, history, humor, young adult but I have to assume it was sold out. I told the manager to alert me the moment a new shipment came in. I think he understood, confused look or not.

I shall search the internet for more of your thoughts or perhaps you could suggest a more personal source? I would think your parents would be a motherlode of information, no doubt they have been on the receiving end of your fury more then most.

Sorry, I won't be oiling you anytime soon. I am flattered by your attention though.

If you'll humor me, what's your definition of a "concern troll"?

I thank you for your compliments. Your concern for original content is important point. You sound like you need an original thought or two.

81. Epic fail. Same old same old.
Edited on Thu Dec-10-09 02:11 PM by tom_paine
You had a chance, and blew it. More sarcastic nonsense. More of the same.

Not worth the time. This was fun, but you're too boring.

Still pushing the "I should be in books" sarcasm? Sad, pathetic and boring.

Then an implied shot that I live with my parents? Sorry, haven't done that since I was 19, over 2 decades ago. Epic failure on your part.

Oh, by the way, you're biting sarcasm surely has wounded as much as mine has wounded you.

 :silly:

Not just an idiot, but a funny idiot, you are.

And you just did grease me up like a bodybuilder, Oily. Just because you blibber and blabber your eight-garde sarcastic nonsense, don't make it so. Who do you think you are, Sean Hannity?

As for original thoughts, I wouldn't waste them on someone who is incapable of having them. You'd have to carry your own weight and this you cannot do.

You're turn, Oily. Keep going. I am enjoying it. More about how I oughta be in pictures, I'm so wonderful to see.

C'mon Oily, give me another shot of your teenaged douchebaggery. I am sure if you keep trying, you can graduate to High School or even Jerry Springer level.

You're smart and I'm dumb. There. I've boiled your last couple posts. Anything original to say?

I have to say I'm not impressed. I'm not even going to keep up my previous theme.

What am I trying to draw out? Is there anything there?

I think the funniest thing that you felt the need to inject in the first place. And you didn't even understand my first post.

I'm hearing a lot of insults but there's no meat to them. Nothing connecting. It sorta feels like a disappointing blowjob. I mean it's still a blowjob but was it worth the price of all those drinks? Hmm, something to think about.

Oh, right you need emoticons. Here, so you can keep track: :silly:

84. Very revealing of yourself, keep going
Edited on Fri Dec-11-09 08:07 AM by tom_paine
I want to thank you for some excellent entertainment. Perhaps cruel of me, like poking the monkey bars with a stick, yet highly entertaining. Someone should perhaps call the SPCA.

Too late to abandon your theme? You've already told me so much about yourself with it.

I do appreciate that you've actually begun imitating MY theme. Imitatation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, either that or just that Cable TV Binary Stupid can't do much else besides imitate.

But I am interested, what sort of person could you be to be so obssessed with the idea of hurting people with your words? What kind of fool thinks that they can hurt somone else with anonymous words posted on a message board? Your kind, I suppose.

Obviously, you're projecting and have been, but whereas you actually ARE trying to hurt me, I am merely performing the equivalent of poking your monkey cage with a stick. Cruel, but highly entertaining.

Also, what kind of insecurity and soul-sickness must drive you to think the worst insult you can lay on someone is that they aren't famous? You really ARE Cable TV Binary Stupid, aren't you?

Here, let me help you. There are actually people out there, unlike you, who are content with their good lives, family and friends. People to whom the "American Way" that "everyone should strive to be famous and sad if they are not" is utter nonsense. I know you don't believe and can't conceive it, but it's true.

Even IF your sad little obsession about hurting someone with words from an anonymous message board or your own belief in the withering power of your words was true, projection in your obsessive insults like a neon arrow pointing back at yourself, I am merely trying to get entertainment from a trained chimp. Well, maybe you're not so well trained. I am also trying to deny you entertainment, and this clearly I have done.

What are you trying to draw out? The same thing you accuse me of, some sign of how badly you've hurt me? (that enough emoticons for you?)

But that, dear monkey, is something you'll not see, for entertainment alone is my goal. And whereas you have fallen far short (as if such fool's goals as you envision were possible on an anonymous internet message board to someone besides other fools), I have gotten much entertainment from you and I hope you will continue this so I can get some more. Tell me more about yourself besides the facts that you think fame is so very important, and your absurd egocentric belief that you can hurt someone with words over an anonymous message board. Please elaborate, and be sure to use plenty of emoticons.

Your interpretation of my comments is laughable and your lack of comprehension is amusing. Not unlike listening to Sean Hannity, you accuse me of what you are, and very amusing & enoyable is the simple fact that you fail to understand I'm just toying with you, ascribing some deeper purpose to it and trying so hard to hurt and wound in return.

 (enough emoticons for you yet?)

This new tack of yours isn't very entertaining and not quite as revealing of yourself as your previous posts. I know you can get back to form and make me smile as much as your earlier attempts that obsessively exposed quite a bit. Tell me more about yourself.

Finally, if your wife, girlfriend, or boyfriend gives you disappointing blowjobs, that's a matter for you and her to discuss, it's probably not smart to let everyone know on a public message board. Just because you're too much of a pissant to ask for and get a proper blowjob, don't get angry at me, please.

90. Hurting you? Wow, off-base.
Not even in the same field. Methinks the lady doth protest (and project) too much.

Where did that meme come from? I thought we were shooting the shit. You seem ready to raise the walls quickly, have you been hurt before?

You're so smart. Thanks for sharing that with us. Intelligent in what area, I'm not so sure yet.

5 emoticons. I'm not seeing the point there either. I use them sometimes as well but it's overkill on your posts. Like when someone puts too many graphics in PP presentation.

You, the comparison between and disappointing sex works for me. I'm going to stick with it. Now come on, no one likes it when you just lay there. Show me something.

92. "Cable TV Binary Stupid"?
Color me amused, because repeating a simplistic catch-phrase isn't exactly a sign of intelligence.

Quite to the contrary in my experience, actually.

Maybe it needs a swooshy graphic and some music?

So, beyond that, let's examine the phrase itself:

"Cable TV" somewhat assumes recent technology....
"Binary" reflects dualistic thinking, however, which has plagued humanity for much of human history....
"Stupid" is an assumption about the intelligence of others, a folly often committed with an amusing set of disclaimers (as in this thread) that intelligence varies in different areas....

So, basically, there's an absurd ignorance of history, a claim to understand the minds of others, followed by an insult to the intellect of those who disagree.

So, your phrase is also "Parchment Dualistic Moron", and "Silk Painting Abacus Idiot".

Good luck with that argument!

72. Take the nuclear weapon issue
that Jimmy Carter likes to bring up every once in a while. That Israel has at least 100 nuclear weapons, but which are never spoken of, never. And so we have an unequal policy toward nuclear proliferation, particularly in the middle east. Will it lead to Israel attacking Iran? Or will they just threaten that until we exert enough pressure on Iran to get some concession. It is a symbiotic relationship I think with mixed ambitions, some based on oil acquisition, some religious, some cultural. It's not simple, but I still would say Israel is essentially a puppet state of the U.S., having received hundreds of billions in military aid in the past 40 years.

So, I think Columbia in many ways assumes that role in South America, in the relationship to Venezuela, and as El Salvador did during the Reagan era, in the Nicaraguan/Contra war. Strategic places to pour money and weapons into to destabilize the region for the ultimate purpose of establishing safe place for U.S. multinationals. Hence Iraq is now controlled mostly by multinational corporations, when oil was completely nationalized before the war. Why exactly did we go to Iraq? Weapons of mass destruction? Osama? Nope, it was the oil. In Venezuela, it is the oil. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

It's okay for the US to have thousands of nukes and spend half its budget on defense related spending (while millions live in poverty and without health care), but for Chavez to want his country to be prepared to defend itself, what the hell is his problem?
