3 Navy SEALs to be arraigned today in Norfolk
Source: The Virginian-Pilot

Two Navy SEALs are scheduled to appear in a military court in Norfolk today on charges stemming from the alleged mistreatment of an Iraqi detainee.

Perrysburg, Ohio-resident Matthew McCabe is due to be arraigned on an assault charge. Blue Island, Ill.-resident Julio Huertas is due to be arraigned on charges of dereliction of duty, impeding an investigation and lying to investigators.

A third man charged in the case, Yorktown, Va.-resident Jonathan Keefe is expected to be arraigned on charges of dereliction of duty and lying to investigators later. The men face court-martial at an undetermined date.

The charges stem from alleged mistreatment of an Iraqi believed to be linked to the 2004 killings of four U.S. contractors.

1. Anyone know if these guys were part of SEAL Task Force 626?
I heard some bad reports about these guys. Supposedly, 626 ran its own torture chamber somewhere in Iraq - waterboarding, strappado, sensory deprivation, you know the routine by now.

8. They are where
the knuckle meets the nose. Sure, we need to trace responsibility for abuse up the chain of command, but you can never let 'just following orders' be an excuse!

6. I've read that the charges are a result of a detainee having a bloody lip
But that seems an awfully minor injury to create this investigation and drum out three commandos who are worth a few million dollar investment each by the military in terms of training and whatnot.

The guy got turned over the the Iraqi's. He complained to them and that started the whole ball rolling.

The seals were offered a Non-judicial punishment but refused it and asked for the court martial.

7. Wait and see...
So often in any case the first "facts" out are fuzzy at best.

9. They get replaced.
Using cost of training as an excuse to retain these people is silly.

The military retires or loses thousands of highly-trained people every month.

No one is irreplaceable.

The graveyards of this planet are full of people previously thought of as such, yet the world keeps turning after they're dead and buried.

11. It's not so much the bloody lip
As it is the false statements that the SEAL's made during the course of the investigation!

10. Sounds like a made-for-denial of subject matter case.

Charge 2 of 3 for a bloody lip, then a jury says: "Huh?" Next, news reports show jury acquits soldiers of torture charges.

Then, no more charges expected to be brought.

Point is, not just against those soldiers, they mean no charges will be brought against anyone for any torture even if that torture involved raping underage children of the tortured, and it will be secretly because a jury felt a bloody lip was all they were judging.
