Deputy Attorney General David W. Ogden, the Justice Department's second in command, is stepping aside to return to private law practice in Washington after less than a year of service, according to two sources familiar with the move.
Ogden had managed the day-to-day operations of the department's more than 100,000 employees since his Senate confirmation earlier this year.
He served as a senior Justice Department official managing the civil division during the Clinton administration and co-led the transition team after President Obama was elected last year.
Unlike some of his predecessors, Ogden did not have deep experience with criminal law issues, and he sometimes crossed swords with the staff of Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., who has become the department's public face on national security and public corruption issues. Ogden will be returning to his lucrative private practice at the Wilmer Hale law firm, the sources said.
