British sailors detained by Iran en route to Gulf yacht race
Source: The Guardian

Britain was making frantic diplomatic efforts last night to stop a dispute with Iran over the seizure of five British sailors becoming an international crisis.

The men were detained six days ago when their racing yacht was intercepted by Iran's navy while on its way from Bahrain to an event in Dubai but the incident was kept secret as the Foreign Office sought to establish what had happened and tried to avoid raising the political temperature.

It is thought the yacht, the Kingdom of Bahrain, may have strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters, the Foreign Office said. The vessel was being delivered by the crew to the annual Dubai to Muscat race, which was due to begin the following day. All the Britons were said to be safe and well and their families have been informed.

The crew members have been named as Oliver Smith, 31, Oliver Young, 21, Sam Usher, Luke Porter, 21 and David Bloomer. David Miliband, the foreign secretary, said: "Officials immediately contacted the Iranian authorities in London and in Tehran on the evening of 25 November, both to seek clarification and to try to resolve the matter swiftly.

1. Iran is making friends all over the world.

One would think that Iran would want to keep a low profile.

17. The liberty is generally used by people ignorant of the incident
to make a nice anti jew point. Want to talk about Tawana Brawley too, i mean you can just go for broke. However the attack does not have a parallel in this discussion. If we were talking about the USS STARK incident it would be slightly relevant. Considering we did not attack Iraq for firing on out vessel by mistake either.

Naval history if funny because "alleged" does not get used often. Iran mined international waters, they were caught red handed. We in turn fucked them up. This is taught at the Naval Academy to this day. Iran lost, no surprise.

As I stated earlier, Iran has a history of being naval fuckups. They have a history of hostage taking and proxy attack on us and french troops.

8. Ahmadinejad's Aide Underlines Iran's Firm Stance on British Sailors
TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior aide to the Iranian President announced here on Tuesday that Tehran will have a firm and decisive approach towards the five British sailors who were arrested in Iran's territorial waters if it becomes clear that they were pursuing ill intentions.

"Naturally, if it is proved that these individuals were pursuing ill intentions, they will be dealt with in a serious and decisive manner," President Ahmadinejad's Advisor and Chief of Staff Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie said.

Mashaie declined to release any details on the case, saying, "The exact details of this report cannot be expressed for now."

Meantime, he underlined that Tehran will try to have a positive and interactive approach towards the case.

"In general, our policies towards the world's policies are fully interactive and positive."

He further noted that Iran's judiciary system, which stands independent, will deal with the case.

11. If it "strayed inadvertently" and the Foreign Office was keeping "the incident . . . secret," then
it sounds like espionage.

I don't know. You tell me.
