Kerry Fires Back at Republican 'Attack Squad'Thu Mar 11, 2004 08:31 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic White House candidate John Kerry, back on Capitol Hill on Thursday to promote party unity, slammed Republican "attack" squads and criticized President Bush for new ads questioning his stance on taxes and security.
Kerry planned a counter-attack on Friday, aides said, with a new television ad in battleground states accusing Bush of misleading America. It asks: "Doesn't America deserve more from its president than misleading negative ads?"
The Massachusetts senator, hit by a flood of Republican criticism for characterizing his Republican critics on Wednesday as a "crooked, lying group," refused to apologize and said his opponents had a history of tearing down their foes.
"There is a Republican attack squad that specializes in trying to destroy people and be negative," Kerry told reporters after lunch in the Capitol with his Senate Democratic colleagues. "I think the president needs to talk about the real priorities of our country."
