Palin’s Exxon Valdez account draws guffaws
Source: Reuters

<snip>

Now, add Alaskan experts who were involved in the case over the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster saying her account over her role in the litigation is distorted for a number of reasons.

In the book, Palin claims to have helped the fishermen, Alaska Natives and other individuals suing Exxon over spill damages prevail in their legal case.

“It took years for Alaska to achieve victory. As governor, I directed our attorney general to write an amicus brief in the case, and, thanks to Alaska’s able attorneys arguing in front of the highest court in the land, in 2008 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the people,” she writes in her book. “Finally, Alaskans could recover some of their losses.”

But Palin’s claims of victory for the plaintiffs and of playing a role in achieving that victory are highly distorted, said the chief attorney for the approximately 32,000 plaintiffs that sued Exxon over damages from the worst oil-tanker spill in U.S. waters.

“That is the most cockamamie bullshit,” said Dave Oesting of Anchorage, lead plaintiff attorney in the private litigants’ civil case against Exxon and its successor, Exxon Mobil Corp. “She didn’t have a damn thing to do with it, and she didn’t know what it was about.”

She might as well have written that. It makes more sense than the stuff she did write.

Or I should say her ghost writer wrote. I'll bet she (the ghost writer) had a cramped jaw from stifling laughs by the minute as she wrote. Then she laughed all the way to the bank.

What a tool Palin is!

Calling it like it was. Sarah did NOTHING for the victims of the EXXON VALDEZ, couldn't even name that case as one of the Supreme Court rulings she had issues with. Or maybe she didn't have issues with it -- it sounds like it was all hunky-dory to her that the Roberts court basically stabbed Alaskans in the back.

Speaking of 'past' - she sure has a problem with the past. The $50,000 accusation is a good one. Didn't she know that is she said that and McCain rebuts that it was her bill for her legal problems in Alaska - that she would resurrect the entire crisis. She is really thick in the head.

11. The Supreme Court decision was a HUGE LOSS for Alaskans
Edited on Wed Nov-18-09 05:44 PM by Tempest
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/26/world/americas/26iht-alaska.4.14027236.html

Across Alaska, plaintiffs in the long-running lawsuit against Exxon reacted to the decision with sorrow and rage, numbed only by relief that their legal saga is finally over.

"This decision is a giant cold slap in the face," said Garland Blanchard, 59, a third-generation fisherman who said he had lost his marriage along with his two fishing boats, house, cat and dog to financial pressures caused by the spill. Blanchard expects to receive less than $100,000 from the settlement, down from the $1.2 million he had previously expected.

...

"Our lives and businesses have been destroyed and we get basically nothing," he said. "It's pathetic."

...

The city of Homer was prepared to place the $4 million to $5 million it was to receive in an endowment to help pay for social services, said Walt Wrede, the city manager.

Now the city will receive a fraction of that amount.

"This is a very depressing verdict," Wrede said, "and people here are just really disappointed."

12. Palin was against the decision before she was for it

After the Supreme Court ruled, Gov. Palin was critical of the outcome. “I am extremely disappointed with today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court,” she was quoted as saying. “While the decision brings some degree of closure to Alaskans suffering from 19 years of litigation and delay, the Court gutted the jury’s decision on punitive damages.” She also said, “It is tragic that so many Alaska fishermen and their families have had their lives put on hold waiting for this decision. My heart goes out to those affected, especially the families of the thousands of Alaskans who passed away while waiting for justice.”

30. The history of "cockamamie bullshit"
the French décalcomanie, which was created in the early 1860s to refer to the craze for decorating objects with transfers (it combines décalquer, to transport a tracing, with manie, a mania or craze). The craze, and the word, soon transferred to Britain — it’s recorded in the magazine The Queen on 27 February 1864: “There are few employments for leisure hours which for the past eighteen months have proved either so fashionable or fascinating as decalcomanie”. It reached the United States around 1869 and — to judge from the number of newspaper references in that year — became as wildly popular as it had earlier in France and Britain. The word was quickly Anglicised as decalcomania and in the 1950s it became abbreviated to decal.

The link between decalcomania and cockamamie isn’t proved, but the evidence suggests strongly that children in New York City in the 1930s (or perhaps a decade earlier) converted the one into the other. There was a fashion for self-decoration at that period, using coloured transfers given away with candy and chewing gum. Shelly Winters wrote of cockamamie in The New York Times in 1956 that “This word, translated from the Brooklynese, is the authorized pronunciation of decalcomania. Anyone there who calls a cockamamie a decalcomania is stared at.”

Quite how the word changed sense to mean something incredible is least clear of all. An early sense was of something inferior or second-rate, which presumably referred to the poor quality of the cheap transfers. It might have been influenced by words such as cock-and-bull or poppycock. Anyone who adopted the craze for sticking transfers on oneself may have been regarded by adults or more serious-minded youngsters as silly — certainly the first sense was of a person who was ridiculous or crazy .....

opinion and she couldn't name one - not even the Valdez opinion which was handed down in June of 2008 and the interview was had at the end of September, beginning of October, 2008. :rofl:

===================

Couric: What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?

Palin: Hmmm, Well, let’s see. There’s — of course in the great history of America there have been rulings that there’s never going to be absolute consensus by every American. And there are those issues, again, like Roe v. Wade, where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know, going through the history of America, there would be others but — — .

Couric: Can you think of any?

Palin: Blah, blah, the law of the land as it reads today.

====================

She is a liar and worse, she believes her own lies.

For kicks and giggles, the Couric interview

69. "The Odd Lies of sarah palin" by Andrew Sullivan
<snip>

"After you have read these, ask yourself: what wouldn't Sarah Palin lie about if she felt she had to?

Palin lied when she said the dismissal of her public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, had nothing to do with his refusal to fire state trooper Mike Wooten; in fact, the Branchflower Report concluded that she repeatedly abused her power when dealing with both men.

Palin lied when she repeatedly claimed to have said, "Thanks, but no thanks" to the Bridge to Nowhere; in fact, she openly campaigned for the federal project when running for governor.

Palin lied when she denied that Wasilla's police chief and librarian had been fired; in fact, both were given letters of termination the previous day.

Palin lied when she wrote in the NYT that a comprehensive review by Alaska wildlife officials showed that polar bears were not endangered; in fact, email correspondence between those scientists showed the opposite.

Palin lied when she claimed in her convention speech that an oil gas pipeline "began" under her guidance; in fact, the pipeline was years from breaking ground, if at all.

Palin lied when she told Charlie Gibson that she does not pass judgment on gay people; in fact, she opposes all rights between gay spouses and belongs to a church that promotes conversion therapy.

Palin lied when she denied having said that humans do not contribute to climate change; in fact, she had previously proclaimed that human activity was not to blame.

Palin lied when she claimed that Alaska produces 20 percent of the country's domestic energy supply; in fact, the actual figures, based on any interpretation of her words, are much, much lower.

Palin lied when she told voters she improvised her convention speech when her teleprompter stopped working properly; in fact, all reports showed that the machine had functioned perfectly and that her speech had closely followed the script.

Palin lied when she recalled asking her daughters to vote on whether she should accept the VP offer; in fact, her story contradicts details given by her husband, the McCain campaign, and even Palin herself. (She later added another version."
