John King to replace Dobbs on CNN
Source: AP via MSNBC

NEW YORK - John King is replacing Lou Dobbs on CNN.

John Klein, CNN president, said Thursday that veteran reporter King will move into the 7 p.m. EST slot that's been vacated by Lou Dobbs. King will host a show about politics beginning early next year.

That puts him in direct competition with MSNBC's Chris Matthews, whose "Hardball" is also about politics. Fox News Channel's Shepard Smith, who does a more general interest newscast, dominates the cable news ratings in that hour.

Dobbs announced abruptly Wednesday evening that Wednesday would be his last show on CNN. He said he wanted to pursue more advocacy journalism, a route that was no longer available to him on CNN.

3. John King is AWFUL. He is the ultimate village wannabe.
In case you have any doubt, these pieces by Glenn Greenwald on King's fawning interview with Saint John McCain last year (and King's petulant response to Greenwald's criticism) should convince you.

25. I'll tell you what I watch in that time slot:
BBC World News America on the BBCA channel. I know not everyone gets this channel in their tier, but it's worth a look if you do. They have national and international news that is actually entertaining as it informs. Not as dry as Newshour (which I also DVR and skim through) and not as condescending as the networks who really dumb it down. And they are more interesting for international stuff than their cousin, the BBC news on PBS which uses some of the same content but without the interviews. For me it is good balanced news (although Katty Kay can get kind of annoying, granted!) Matt Frei is a good egg. It is repeated at 10 Eastern, and sometimes with an update, as with the recent election coverage, and the recent execution of that serial killer.

7. I'll give King a chance
With the repeat of Hardball there wasn't anything else to watch in that time slot. Dobbs was nauseating and Faux isn't an option on my TV. So, I'll give King a chance. If he tries to maintain a Dobbsian type show however, it is back to Ace of Cakes for an hour.

21. Sanchez of course
On December 10, 1990, Sanchez struck a pedestrian, Jeffrey Smuzinick, with his car on a residential street near Dolphin Stadium after Smuzinick darted into the road.<4> Smuzinick was paralyzed and eventually died in an assisted living facility in 1995.<4><5> Sanchez, who had just left an NFL football game with his father (and left the scene of the accident), was not charged with causing the accident, but was charged with and pleaded no contest to DUI.<4>

And let's not forget that Sanchez was the one who claimed the victim "darted" into the road. Also, Sanchez' lawyer said he was drunk due to the fact that after he hit Smuzinick, he was so rattled that he went home and had a few drinks.

24. And here's some more
http://www.miaminewtimes.com/1991-08-07/news/the-forgotten-man/

"Minutes after midnight on the morning of December 10, 1990, an intoxicated Smuzinick darted out in front of a Volvo on a residential street near Joe Robbie Stadium. The driver of the car, WSVN-TV Channel 7 anchorman Rick Sanchez, became the subject of a subsequent January 16 New Times story that described the odd circumstances of the accident. Sanchez, whom a Metro-Dade police officer said "smelled strongly of alcohol," first stopped his car but then later left the scene. A blood test to determine Sanchez's sobriety was not administered until an hour and fifteen minutes after the collision. Though Sanchez says he tried to aid Smuzinick at the scene of the accident and flag down motorists, eyewitnesses claim the anchorman ignored the injured man and loudly told police and bystanders that blood tests were pointless, and would hurt his public image."

28. Lou Dobbs to Depart CNN
Source: NYTimes

<snip>

"Lou Dobbs, the longtime CNN anchor whose anti-immigration views made him a TV lightning rod, plans to announce Wednesday that he is leaving the network, two network employees said.

A CNN executive confirmed that Mr. Dobbs will announce his plans on his 7 p.m. program.

Mr. Dobbs informed his staff members of his intentions in a meeting Wednesday afternoon. He did not immediately respond to a telephone call seeking comment.

Well known for his political positions, Mr. Dobbs is an outlier at CNN, which has sought to position itself as a middle ground of sorts in the fractious cable news arena. Perhaps hinting at plans for an exit from CNN, Mr. Dobbs met with Roger Ailes, the chairman of the Fox News Channel, last month. At the time Mr. Dobbs was viewed as a potential hire for the Fox Business Network."

I think he is up, and now that Lou is about, expect an effective swap! Sheperd Smith for Lou Dobbs. And yes, Sheperd and Anderson can co-exist at the same network. Kieran Chetry saw the light and now it's time for Shep to force CNN back to honest, not bias-free, but transparent. Label opinion as such and news as "just the facts". BTW, as I watch this. I guess he was run out TONIGHT. Kitty Pilgrim is the #2, and she may get the/a show in the interim. More than likely, Rick Sanchez gets the hour, he may be warming the seat for Sheperd.

Do they think his outlandish views will help improve their crumbing numbers. I wish they would go bankrupt. But that would never happen. Murdoch has to be in trouble, else just think, why is he going to start to charge for his news.

I so knew this would happen sooner or later, Dobbs will fit right in over at Faux. I still can't believe it happened this soon, I was expecting him to take a little longer.

Makes me wonder who else will go on Faux, perhaps they can take Candy Crowley too, but why just CNN? Why don't they go ahead and take Joey Scar and Mika from MSNBC, put'em on the Fox and friends crew.

Jeffrey Lord, of the American Spectator and United Church of Christ, is "sounding" the alarm for free speech to keep Rush, Mark Levin, Quinn Rose, and others of that ilk, including Glenn Beck and Lou Dobbs, to keep their voices strong. He may have to wait 6 months for TV, but his radio show continues.

His roundtable, the Fort Hood situation has set him off again.

90. "sounding" the alarm for free speech
The 1st Amendment merely states that CONGRESS shall make no LAWS prohibiting free speech. If CNN or Fox or Clear Channel want to have someone say something, or not say something, they can. Dobbs was not fired, was he? And even if he was, there is no LAW stopping him or the others from buying their own show, running their own radio station or publishing any fool screed they want. There is also no law that says anyone has to listen or read it. And there certainly is no law that gives them the right to be taken seriously.

They can all do a big baby whining tour with Carrie Prejean.

101. BRING OUR TROOPS HOME (petition)
October 06, 2009

I've laid out my view clearly on why it's time to begin withdrawing our troops from Afghanistan and Iraq, and also from their stations and bases around the world. But in case you missed it, please listen to my comments on why I hope you will join me in bringing our troops home.

Eight years into the war in Afghanistan, our top military leadership has yet to define clearly what victory and success will look like, nor has it identified the goals and objectives of the conflict. Like you, I've been thinking about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for a long time. I've decided that it's time to bring our troops home. I hope you will join me in that effort.

I am disgusted with what is happening with General McChrystal, General Petraeus and the general staff of the Pentagon, President Obama, this administration, and the previous administration have been waging war in Afghanistan for eight years. I am upset that the White House has chosen not to consider withdrawing our troops from Afghanistan while our generals don't have a strategy for victory.

What happened? In the Bush administration we began to tolerate failure on the part of our general staff. We began to tolerate excuses on the part of the general staff. And it¹s being continued under this administration. I¹ve heard people say this president now owns the war in Afghanistan, that this President owns the war in Iraq. You know what, that's not true: You and I own the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. You and I are responsible for every single man and woman in uniform who is serving there and around the world.

And I have a proposition for President Obama: You say you will not consider withdrawing our troops from Afghanistan, so here is my proposition, Mr.
President: Given that we have not succeeded under the leadership of the general staff for eight years in Afghanistan, eight years of combat, why not re-evaluate what we are doing with our troops worldwide, not just Afghanistan?

For the sake of our men and women in uniform who deserve far better leadership than they are receiving from their general staff, please bring them home. It is time to call a halt to the nonsense, bring home our troops, and not just from Iraq and Afghanistan, but the 60,000 troops in Germany, 37,000 in South Korea, 10,000 in Japan, 10,000 troops in Italy.

Bring all of our troops home, and leave only a modest presence wherever it might be proven absolutely necessary, but bring home our troops. And let our allies carry their own share of the burden, put their military forward against whatever enemy is perceived, potential or existent, and let's work as mature responsible partners in these alliances, rather than the United States as some sort of senior partner, some sort of big brother who carries most of the burden, nearly all of the financial sacrifice, and in Iraq and Afghanistan, the overwhelming sacrifice of blood from the brave men and women who serve this nation in uniform.

It is time, Mr. President, this is your opportunity, this is the nation's opportunity, and it's your responsibility as Commander-in-Chief. I hope you'll consider it seriously, and I hope each and everyone in Independent America will think about this call for reason. I don¹t believe there is a more urgent issue today.

Join me and sign this petition, for the good of the nation.

10-24-09
Geraldo Rivera Slams Lou Dobbs In Speech, Says Dobbs Won't Be Coming To Fox

Excerpt:

SNIP
He then trained his sights on Dobbs: "Lou Dobbs, a man who was an accomplished journalist, and who left to start his own venture in the digital media... and then came back to CNN, and nobody was watching his program. He discovered that one of the ways he could get people to watch was to make of the image of a young Latino trying to get into this country a profoundly negative icon. Lou Dobbs is almost singlehandedly responsible for creating, for being the architect of the young-Latino-as-scapegoat for everything that ails this country."

As for the chances of Dobbs one day washing ashore at Fox, Rivera told the crowd, "I can tell you proudly, when was widely rumored to be coming to my network, I called my boss... and he said it's absolutely untrue."

Boy, what shocking news!!!! I could see this one coming months ago and I'm sure he was getting squeezed by some higher ups at CNN with all his bullshit rhetoric. They probably asked him to tone it down. No loss at CNN. Another hate-spewing windbag. I'm sure he's headed to Fox to add another blustery body to their arsenal of hate mongers. And they like to call themselves Fair and Balanced???? What a joke. Anyone who says they are Fair and Balanced is full of shit. Maybe he has a no compete clause which will keep him off the air for awhile. That sure would be nice. But at least he's off CNN. That is a start.

108. Was I the only one who somewhat enjoyed Dobbs?
I disagreed with a lot of what he said but I did somewhat agree with his views economically. And he gave me a platform to get news from things the other network anchors would refuse to air.

He gave a "platform" alright.

To racists, nativists, birthers, teabaggers, and Obama-hating reactionaries of every stripe.

He sucked, and we can only hope his next trip, to the place with the guy with the fork, is not a short one.

176. He was no different than anyone else on CNN
Everyone on CNN has a "platform". The only difference is he didn't have a pro-Obama platform. I thought he brought up some good points about Obama but he also had some that were out there. I didn't agree with him on immigration or most social issues but I do agree with him on Obama's birth certificate and most economic issues. I fail to see how he is a racist. Is it just because he is against immigration? Not that I think he is the best anchor (in fact far from it) but I fail to see why everyone is bragging about his departure. He just had a different opinion than everybody here.

I don't get this partisan bullshit. Why is anyone who bashes Obama suddenly a racist, right winger? I have bashed Obama number of times and I'm certainly not a right-winger. Obama has made no significant change and hasn't carried out his promises. Most promises he hasn't even attempted to fulfill.

the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, "free trade", and everything the Bush administration failed to do (like he use to do on CNN until he got off on a weird track lately), and see how long it would take the right wing ideologues to fire him.

120. Then when he said that the bullet that hit his house the other night
almost hit his wife, perhaps it was someone that believed him about Mexican immigrants and was mistakenly trying to take one out. :sarcasm:

Seriously he is trying to blame Latinos/his critics for the gunshots, but he lives in the country surrounded by an area used for hunting. I have been in such areas and it is nothing for bullets to travel quite a distance from hunters guns. I have almost been hit by at least one and there are quite a few people in this area that have. During the heavy hunting season, people in the country try to stay in as much as possible and otherwise live in fear of stray bullets. Poor Lou, feeling targeted again. :nopity:

Dobbs resonates with a lot of people who share much of the same disaffection with the 'establishment" as does DU, although they're totally FREAKED OUT out on jingoistic "Nativist" issues. I can recall more than few paens of praise to Dobbs last year, right here on DU!

133. I may defend Free speech
But there comes a time when someone consistently makes a fool of themselves, despite much evidence to the contrary. Good Riddance to bad trash, and I bet even money Fox News picks him up.

Now, I know some people on this board love him, and that they have learned to dress up the old bigotry with phrases like "they are taking our jobs." As a Latino that does not need a Green Card (namely because the Anglos conquered Puerto Rico and kept it) let me say this, the fact that America has all these people who actually WANT to come here and work is a blessing. Yes, we may keep our food and speak a little Spanish, but the vast majority of us come here, and blend into American society. Some of us, like Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, even become staunch Liberals. No, we do not want to make some Quebec-style "Spanish Zone" because, even though many Yankees do not appreciate or understand the promise of America, we do.

144. Lou for Faux POTUS candidate?
Wow. I remember he was entertaining running for POTUS in 2008 as an independent. It wouldn't surprise me if that's what he's considering. Isn't there a new Tea Party (Freep Party?) that's being ginned up as a faux-populist channel for pissed off stupid people? Lou might be a natural leader for those people, scary thought.

He's actually the kind of right-winger we need to build a bridge to. I can't stand the guy, but he reaches a lot of the people who the left will never reach, and he reaches them on some critical issues, such as campaign finance reform and corporations behaving badly.

If he'd target the anti-immigrant issue properly, which would be at the businesses that use the current system to avoid paying Americans real wages, and the politicians that enable them, he'd be great on that issue. The immigrant him/herself is just another poor person trying to improve their situation and deserves no ill will.

That said, Dobbs scares me, he seems like the authoritarian type and has a lot of inner anger issues, we'd be better off if he'd just go away.

160. Update: John King to Replace Lou Dobbs; Focus Will Be on Political News
<snip>

"John King will anchor an ambitious new 7 p.m. hour of political news for CNN beginning early next year, the network said Thursday.

The announcement came a day after Lou Dobbs abruptly announced that he was quitting his CNN anchor job immediately. Until Mr. King begins his new assignment, a rotating cast of anchors will fill in at 7 p.m. on an interim program called “CNN Tonight.”

Mr. King is currently the anchor of “State of the Union,” CNN’s Sunday political news show. Previously the cable news channel’s chief national correspondent, Mr. King became better known during last year’s presidential election when he dissected election results on his touch-screen “Magic Wall.”

In moving Mr. King to a weekday time slot, CNN will seek to improve its dismal evening ratings. According to Nielsen, CNN ranked third among cable news channels in the 7 p.m. hour in October, mirroring its other prime-time declines."

Though he was a complete whack job on a lot of issues, on others he was pretty moderate. He certainly made no secret that he wasn't a fan of Dubya, at any rate.
