Texas Gunman was not killed, is alive and in custody
Edited on Thu Nov-05-09 09:27 PM by bigworld
Source: BBC

A US army major has opened fire on fellow soldiers at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, with death toll now standing at 12, with 31 injured.

Base commander Lt Gen Bob Cone has now said that the gunman was not killed, as earlier stated, but is in custody.

Two other suspects were questioned, but the army now says only one gunman was involved in the incident.

Lt Gen Cone said the motive for the shooting was not known. One of the dead was a policeman, others were soldiers.

President Barack Obama described it as "a horrific outburst of violence".

The gunman has been named Major Nidal Malik Hasan, and he is now said to be wounded, but in a stable condition in custody

I saw a representative of Fort Hood stating that the man "was killed" earlier.

6. For them to get so much wrong in a direct press conference ??
Edited on Thu Nov-05-09 10:07 PM by tomm2thumbs

The point of a press conference is to give out accurate, known information, so to have released completely inaccurate information during a press conference and get both the first responder and shooter as both dead - and then later, both alive, is very 'off' no matter what the situation.

7. The point of a press conference..
.. is to stop speculation and get _somewhat_ on message, not to be 100% right.

9. There's so much pressure from the press for information
They do sometimes cave in and give out something early in a case like this without knowing the full story.

Army PAO isn't an easy job when the feces hits the oscillating blades.

25. exactly right
I suspect the folks second guessing here have no flipping clue as to how chaotic things were in Ft. Hood, with more than 40 wounded or dead, police, military, EMTs all converging, trying to get the injured treated and moved to various hospitals. No one person could know what had gone on or have all the facts and the person who has to face the press simply is going on faith that the information he/she is given is accurate. Often times, owing to the fact that these aren't tidy, organized events, that turns out not to be the case.

13. Multiple gunman?
Sure I can see that as an initial report. Its texas. I'll bet that one gunman started shooting people and 10 others pulled out their guns and did't know who was the original shooter. What I would like to see is the ballistics report on the wounded. The question now becomes how much friendly fire occured?

37. I didn't know that. If the killer had access to two guns, then it was either premeditated
to a greater degree than I first thought or a very unfortunate coincidence that those guns were accessible when he flipped out.

24. EVERYONE is isolated an bullied at one point during a military career
it is just part of it. Stuff that would NEVER fly in the real world in normal in the military, or was 10 years ago.. Race, religion, accents whatever was fair game. No one got shot over it. Being fucked with is part of the culture.

he had plenty of options as a fucking MAJOR than to go on a shooting spree. He is a human turd and hope the rest of his life is miserable.

Filled with soldiers (while still being there for criminal offenses) that will not look favorable on his rampage. He'll probably be isolation until his execution. They would tear him apart in the general population.

44. IMO, that's sick-minded. I hope he serves the rest of his life in prison, but if he has a brain
injury, he may die when they disconnect the ventilator.

It serves NO civilized purpose to ramp up THE HATE. My friends from Jordan are going to experience even more discrimination. It's VILE.

Don't spread the hate. Yes we want justice for the victims. Justice is having this man spend the rest of his days in prison. Execution and retribution has kept our blessed nation "hate filled." It's time to become like other westernized nations and abolish the death penalty.

And I didn't imply anything different.

It is appropriate (if not very 'evolved') to hate this douche bag. Screw him. I hope he recovers and is put in Gen-Pop and gets shit beaten out of him every single day her serves until they strep his ass to the execution table.

22. Newsflash to some here....
First reports are almost ALWAYS wrong! This is even more so in this day and age with so many "journalists" releasing information, often nothing more than speculation. This doesn't mean there is a grand conspiracy, it doesn't mean they were lying, when it really comes down to the reality of the situation, it is really important to wait for the dust to settle, so to speak, before the real story emerges.

33. And of course he fakes his ID as Palestinian yet he is allowed to stay in mil
He drew attention from federal agents because of internet postings about suicide bombings
But, more recently, federal agents grew suspicious.

At least six months ago, Hasan came to the attention of law enforcement officials because of Internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats, including posts that equated suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the lives of their comrades.

The guy lists his nationality as Palestian(Sirhan Sirhan anyone?) but he was not Palestinian(bad guys are always Palestinian)
On a form filled out by those seeking spouses through a program at the mosque, Hasan listed his birthplace as Arlington, Va., but his nationality as Palestinian, Khan said.

"I don't know why he listed Palestinian," Khan said, "He was not born in Palestine."

He had been at Virginia Tech where that other "Lone Nut" shot up a bunch of people
He served eight years as an enlisted soldier. He also served in the ROTC as an undergraduate at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg. He received a bachelor's degree in biochemistry there in 1997.

http://www.statesman.com/news/content/gen/ap/US_Fort_Hood_Shooting_Suspect.html

So a guy lying about his nationality and who repeatedly tells everyone around him how much the military sucks is allowed to stay in the military and go back to Iraq. This makes no sense. stinks.
