FBI: gunshots hit US Rep. DeFazio's office windows

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- The FBI says four shots hit a federal courthouse in Oregon late Wednesday night or early Thursday, with three of them breaking windows in U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio's office. No one was in the office at the time.

The FBI said Thursday it's not known whether the Democratic congressman's office in Eugene was the intended target.

Agency spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele says she's not sure whether the building had surveillance video.

The FBI said that between 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday, three shots broke windows in DeFazio's office on the second floor. A fourth bullet hit the building wall in an area above DeFazio's office. No details were released about the type of ammunition.

Three bullets broke the windows of Rep. Peter DeFazio’s office in the U.S. Courthouse in Eugene late Wednesday or early Thursday, FBI officials said.

No one was in the office at the time of the overnight shooting. Staffers for DeFazio, a Springfield Democrat, discovered the damage when they arrived for work Thursday morning, FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele said.

“We’re obviously taking this very seriously,” Steele said.

At least four shots were fired at the federal building at 405 E. Eighth Ave. Three bullets hit and broke the windows of DeFazio’s second-floor office, while a fourth hit the wall above the office, which faces Mill Street. Steele said it was unclear if the bullets went completely through the glass.

Investigators believe the shots were fired sometime between 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday, Steele said.

Peter is about as good as a Congress person gets. I respect both him and his well organized staff very much, and it is terrible that such a thing would be directed at good people as Peter and his staff. May the FBI find the bastards quickly.
