Internet providers sue hundreds over 'spam' e-mails
Internet providers sue hundreds over 'spam' e-mails

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some of the nation's largest Internet providers, in an unusual joint effort, said Wednesday they filed six lawsuits against hundreds of people who were accused of sending millions of unwanted e-mails in violation of the new U.S. law against "spam."

The legal actions by Microsoft (MSFT ), America Online (TWX), EarthLink (ELNK) and Yahoo(YHOO), represent the first major industry actions under the "can spam" legislation that went into effect Jan. 1. The lawsuits, filed in federal courts in California, Georgia, Virginia and Washington state, were announced at a news conference.

The companies said the defendants include some of the nation's most notorious large-scale spammers. The Internet providers — collectively with tens of millions of subscribers — said they shared information, resources and investigative information to identify some of the defendants.

1. Spammers should be taken out and shot
I generally disapprove of the death penalty, but in the case of the assholes who have made my email difficult to use I'd make an exception.

4. adaware has nothing to do
with trojans or viruses. they only take care of 'malware', spyware, and the like.

don't you have an antivirus program or a pop up blocker??

6. My sister's computer had something like that too
If you put whatever text you're getting into Google, it should give you some pages on how to get rid of it.

7. Get two programs (yes, you need both).
Spybot Search & Destroy (http://security.kolla.de)
Lavasoft's AdAware (http://www.lavasoft.de)

Each has an "update" feature, be sure to run it, to get the latest detection abilities. Then scan your system using each tool, and remove what it finds.

There are a couple more adware/spyware removal programs out there, but I like these two the best and together they get rid of about 99% of what's out there.

3. Didn't the spam flood start during * regime ?
Just wondering?
Is there any connection? It keeps us wasting time deleting spam?
It seems like it started 2-3 years ago.

I've noticed that, too. I'm getting tons of garbage that I never used to get before the Bush cabal was in office.

5. spam sux
Crappy as it is, the spammers will always find a way around the obstacles we put in their paths. THe best solution to unwanted email is a violent, grassroots campaign organized public lynching of spammers. Failing that, I'll just use blacklist/whitelist email

8. Sick, sick, sick of spammers
I get over a 100 a day, and some of them are just plain sick; I've got kids and wouldn't want them to even have email accounts at this point. Hope something can be done! In a toss up between spammers and telemarketers, I'm not sure who is worse.

10. watching and reading many interviews of top spammers
They make me sick...each time they've come off as wild-west cowboys, deceptive catch me if you can types, and people who have an outright disdain and contempt for laws and other people...all in the name of "making a living" as they say..

On the corporate slime scale, they're right down there with insurance companies, tobacco, and credit card companies
