2. Reuters:bomb kills more than 80 in Pakistan's Peshawar...number still rising
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A car bomb killed more than 80 people and wounded about 100 on Wednesday in a crowded market in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, a doctor and officials said, the latest in a series of bloody militant attacks.

The blast, the deadliest in Pakistan this year, came hours after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Pakistan pledging a fresh start in ties with an increasingly embattled and skeptical partner in the struggle against Islamist militancy.

The Peshawar bomb went off in the busy Peepal Mandi market street in the old city, sparking a fire that engulfed several buildings.

"The figure is rising. We have more than 80 dead including women and children," Sahib Gul, a doctor at the city's main hospital, told Reuters.

Pakistan is on high alert amid fears of retaliatory strikes by Taliban militants as the army attacks their strongholds in South Waziristan on the Afghan border.

The blast was caused by a car bomb, a senior city official said.

4. Up to 87 now
At least 87 people have been killed and more than 200 injured after a car bomb exploded in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, according to a hospital official.

The explosion in the Peepal Mandi market street caused a fire that has engulfed many of the surrounding buildings.
Many of the casualties are women and children.

A doctor at the city's hospital, Sahib Gul, told Reuters that the death toll is continuing to rise.

Sky's Asia correspondent Alex Crawford says that the damage caused is huge and the death toll is expected to rise.

"The Inspector General of the Northwest Frontier Police says many, many more casualties are expected than are currently at the hospital. They believe that the bomb was 100kg of explosives detonated remotely, there is so much rubble emergency vehicles are struggling to get close."

6. even more: Car bomb kills 91 in Pakistani city of Peshawar
Car bomb kills 91 in Pakistani city of Peshawar
By RIAZ KHAN (AP) – 12 minutes ago

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A car bomb tore through a busy market in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing 91 people as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton visited the country and pledged American support for its campaign against Islamist militants.

More than 200 people were wounded in the blast in the main northwestern city of Peshawar, the deadliest in a surge of attacks this month. The government blamed militants seeking to avenge an army offensive launched this month against al-Qaida and Taliban in their stronghold close to the Afghan border.

5. In WWII carpet bombing of cities had the unintended effect of solidifying civilian morale
against the "enemy" rather than breaking the will of English or German civilians to resist as intended. "Collateral damage" from US drone and other attacks alienates civilians.

Is there any evidence that mass casualty attacks on civilians ever achieve their goal? It seems like a tactic that "should" work but never does in practice. Even if it is not "effective", however, it continues because it is a relatively safe and cheap way to attack the "enemy", since you are not attacking hardened military targets that are likely to be hard to get at and might shoot back.

9. Enlighten me about Pakistan's military.
I thought they have a pretty strong military. They are enduring violence, murder and terrorist bombings. Why don't they join forces with the US and eradicate as much Al Quida as possible.

Afghanistan's neighbors need to get more involved in this war so we can get the hell out of there.
