Pakistan detains 11 Iranian Guards on the border
Source: Reuters

Mon Oct 26, 2009 9:11am EDT
QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani forces detained 11 Iranian Revolutionary Guards on Monday for crossing into Pakistan days after an Iranian commander was reported saying his men should be allowed to confront terrorists in Pakistan.

The Guards were arrested in the Mashkhel area on the border with Iran eight days after a suicide bomber killed 42 people, including six Revolutionary Guard commanders, in Iran's southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province.

A Sunni Muslim group Jundollah (God's soldiers), claimed responsibility for the blast.

Iran says the group operates from across the border in Pakistan. On Tuesday last week, a senior Revolutionary Guards commander said his force should be given permission to confront terrorists inside Pakistan, state media reported.

1. If the excuse is good enough for the U.S.

It should be acceptable for every other country as well.

2. This Is Odd - Chinese News Sources Also Reported...
That Iran had protested Pakistan's involvement in the bombings as well. My question is why would a Pakistan suicide bomber pick a fight with Iran? Also, if Iran is correct about the attack being planned out of a border region with Pakistan, what is the deal with Pakistan's borders?

4. The Baloch liberation army is on both sides of the border,
fighting for independence from both countries. I suppose they plan and carry out terrorist attacks on both sides. Sounds like a mess.

5. When you have an empire, your borders aren't always rational.
They wind up being a combination of relatively good natural boundaries plus wherever the last battle left you--whether it means part of your "natio" (ethnic group, more or less) is in another country or whether you wind up with multiple ethnicities.

Such is Iran. The Persians preside over Kurds and Azeri, Balochis and Arabs, Lurs and Turkmen. The Azeri see their kinsmen across the border with Azerbaidjan, the Arabs their kin in Iraq and the UAE (etc.), the Balochis see their kinsmen across the border in Pakistan, and the Turkmen their brethren in Turkmenistan. I know the Baloches in Pakistan are in their third time of rebellion, some wanting independence, and there have been Arab groups seeking unification with Arabic-speaking lands. And the Kurds--we can't forget about them, esp. the ones in the West.

People like complaining that the British did a crappy job with Iraq's borders. Persia's are probably worse.
