Inspectors to visit Iranian plant
Source: BBC

UN inspectors have arrived in Iran where they are due to visit a previously secret nuclear facility.

The plant is near the city of Qom and the UN officials are expected to remain in the country for three days.

The visit comes as further difficulties are experienced by the major powers trying to agree a deal with Iran over its nuclear programme.

Under a new proposed plan, Iran would send its enriched uranium away to be turned into fuel.

Of course, I am sure Republicans are just praying for inspections and diplomacy to fail, so that they can have another war.

3. What's Good For the Goose
Maybe now that U.S. and international pressure has convinced fellow Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty member Iran to allow international inspectors into is newest, under-construction, nuclear facility, the United States will respond by allowing international inspectors into our own military nuclear facilities. The U.S. signed a special waiver with the NNPT that lists over a hundred sites that can be inspected, but declares any military site deemed to be covered by 'national security' to be closed to any international inspection.

For that matter, now that the United States is coming down so heavily on Iran, which has the absolute right under the NNPT to experiment with and develop nuclear technology for peaceful uses - which includes refining uranium to powerplant fuel grade - we will also do something about the four countries in the world who are true rogue nuclear nations.

Until we have more than assumptions that Iran is going to go beyond refining fuel and begin creating weapons-grade material, they are still acting within international law. Assumptions are not enough to act on (see Bush assumptions about WMDs and Saddam being behind 9/11).

Meanwhile, we have North Korea, known to be armed with nuclear weapons, which pulled out of the NNPT when the Bush administration reneged on American promises made in the Clinton Agreed Framework of 1994.

In addition, there are three other countries that have nuclear weapons, sufficient delivery systems, are in non-compliance with United Nations Resolutions over their nuclear arsenals, and absolutely refuse to sign the NNPT or allow ANY outside inspection.

These countries, Pakistan, India, and Israel, are all American allies, receiving billions in military and economic aid. Bush even promised advanced nuclear technology and refined fuel to India.

Ignoring these blatantly illegal nuclear rogue states, the U.S. is jumping on Iran, which has not yet been demonstrated to have broken international law, with both work-booted feet.

Funny the way this works out...
