BloombergIran May Qualify for Nuclear Fuel Supply Plan, Poneman Says
Oct. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Iran may qualify for imports of uranium under an international program to provide countries with “cradle-to-grave” supplies of nuclear fuel for peaceful purposes, Deputy U.S. Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman said.
The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership, which groups countries with nuclear power programs such as the U.S., China, France and Russia, is working to set up a framework to supply countries with fuel for their civilian atomic power plants. The program would eliminate the need to develop uranium-processing facilities that could also provide weapons-grade material. Iran is not a GNEP member, though it has signed a United Nations treaty on nuclear nonproliferation.
“Iran as an NPT party would have the right to access to peaceful nuclear technology for peaceful purposes,” Poneman told reporters in Beijing, where the GNEP met this week. “And if Iran were to address the world’s concerns about its nuclear program, if it were to comply with all of its IAEA safeguards obligations, then the U.S. would not have an objection.”
Earlier this week Poneman was in Vienna, helping to negotiate a deal under the International Atomic Energy Agency in which Iran would transfer enriched uranium to Russia for processing into fuel for reactors. Iranian state television reported yesterday that the country wants to buy nuclear fuel abroad and is awaiting a “positive response” from potential suppliers.
