TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran will reply next week to a U.N.-drafted plan for it to cut a stockpile of nuclear fuel, Iranian state television quoted a senior official as saying on Friday.

Iran Fails to Accept Nuclear Proposal
By VOA News
23 October 2009

Iran has failed to accept a United Nations-backed proposal for uranium enrichment and has instead offered its own counterproposal.

Iranian state television is quoting an unidentified Iranian negotiator as saying Tehran has proposed that it purchase nuclear fuel for its reactor. The negotiator says Iran is awaiting a "positive and constructive" response to its plan from world powers.

Details of the Iranian counter proposal have not been made public.

Negotiators in Vienna had set a Friday deadline for an agreement, following talks between Iran, the United States, France and Russia.

WASHINGTON, Oct 23 (Reuters) - The United States still hopes that Iran will respond positively to a U.N.-backed deal on nuclear fuel supply when it makes its formal response next week, the U.S. State Department said on Friday.

"We hope that they will next week provide a positive response," department spokesman Ian Kelly told a news briefing, adding that "obviously we would have preferred to have a response today. We approach this with a sense of urgency."
