Gen. Eaton: Dick Cheney Was "Incompetent War Fighter"

Press Release Washington DC 22 October 2009

Afghanistan Afghanistan Dick Cheney Paul Eaton

Today, National Security Network Senior Adviser Gen. Paul Eaton (Ret.), who served more than 30 years in the United States Army and from 2003-2004 oversaw the training of the Iraqi military, responded to Dick Cheney's accusations on Afghanistan from last night:

***************************

"The record is clear: Dick Cheney and the Bush administration were incompetent war fighters. They ignored Afghanistan for 7 years with a crude approach to counter-insurgency warfare best illustrated by: 1. Deny it. 2. Ignore it. 3. Bomb it. While our intelligence agencies called the region the greatest threat to America, the Bush White House under-resourced our military efforts, shifted attention to Iraq, and failed to bring to justice the masterminds of September 11.

"The only time Cheney and his cabal of foreign policy 'experts' have anything to say is when they feel compelled to protect this failed legacy. While President Obama is tasked with cleaning up the considerable mess they left behind, they continue to defend torture or rewrite a legacy of indifference on Afghanistan. Simply put, Mr. Cheney sees history throughout extremely myopic and partisan eyes.

"As one deeply invested in the Armed Forces of this country, I am grateful for the senior military commanders assigned to leading this fight and the men and women fighting on the ground. But I dismiss men like Cheney who inject partisan politics into the profound deliberations our Commander-in-Chief and commanders on the ground are having to develop a cohesive and comprehensive strategy, bringing to bear the economic and diplomatic as well as the military power, for Afghanistan -- something Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld never did.

"No human endeavor can be as profound as sending a nation's youth to war. I am very happy to see serious men and women working hard to get it right."

16. It's interesting to me that when Cheney was the "shadow president"...
...he spent most of his time "in the shadows" or in his man-sized safe and we hardly ever saw him. Now he and his shill of a daughter won't shut up. I really wish the media would stop giving him the attention the Cheney family so clearly craves.

36. Hopefully there are more military leaders who share this opinion of Cheney...

and the hope is also that there does not continue to be some sort of "shadow government" where proper allegiance is not given to the real Commander in Chief.

4. When you're up on the veranda, looking down at all the little (poor) people (soldiers),
it's easy to criticize. Cheney doesn't know what it's like to serve his country, because when the time came for him to do so, he had other more important things to do, so he didn't.

He was part of one of the worst periods of American history, and the number two player in the worst administration in the history of this country.

They dropped the ball and failed to protect us on September 11, 2001.

They allowed incompetent people to run the show after New Orleans was obliterated, which exposed their incompetency as well.

They started a war based on lies, and went after the WRONG PEOPLE. This allowed the REAL ENEMY to regroup, expand, and grow.

They were so busy implementing their little Neocon plan, they allowed every other area to decline.

They sent brave men and women off to do their dirty work for them. Cheney is a COWARD. George Bush is a COWARD.

Neither should be appearing at events, writing books, appearing on talk shows, or doing anything else except preparing their defense.

In a just world, this is exactly what they would be doing now, were it not for Barack "Change" Obama and Eric Holder. Get on with it, guys. Justice must be served.

I've noticed a disturbing trend. Whenever an armed forces member is critical of Cheney/Bush he is basically ignored by the MSM.

20. I find this interesting
that we have a President in office for 10 months and he is blamed for everything that is wrong with this country. He has started two wars, plunged this country into maybe the worst financial crises this country has seen, and he did it in only 10 months all by himself. If I was them I would be totally afraid because he has all this power and can get so much done without raising a sweat. It all goes to show that Mr. Bush just sat in his chair and went on vacation as this country ran smoothly and nothing needed to be done.

This was suggested on MSNBC while covering Cheney's latest "dithering" at the podium. It's beginning to appear that dementia is setting in. There can be no other explanation
for Cheney making comments that at a time of war are dangerous and treasonous.

32. There is war, and then there is profit, power, and illegal revenue.
And on those issues, Dick Cheney will go down in the books as one of the most ruthless, efficient, deceptive, and aggressive of contemporary leaders.

They were incompetent warfighters because the wars played only a part of Dick Cheney's plans. Their plans were for maximization of profit, consolidation of power, control of illicit money flow from black market oil and poppies, and creating world instability to justify their actions and smooth their graceful exit back behind the curtains. Ending the wars would have interfered with those plans. Fighting them indifferently and incompetently helped those plans.

They did all of those things so well people refused to believe it was happening, for years.

Your analysis is spot on, sofa king.

We should also mention that General Eaton, out of deference to former colleagues I'm sure, failed to mention that the Cheney-Bush failures could not have happened without the cooperation of many Generals and Admirals who should have resigned their posts rather than acquiesce to the treasonous orders issued by that illegitimate regime.

Dick Cheney asserted that he did not receive any form of compensation from Haliburton, but his lies were uncovered and documented--he did received compensation.

And then there's the matter of Condoleeza Rice's trips all over the world insisting that the United States does not torture, all the while Dick Cheney was operating his ghoulish torture operations in full force (and against international treaties signed).

I hate to complain at the slightest gleam of sanity from the military, but what took him so long? and did he have to wait until the damage was so deep and widespread to say that Cheney, as well as Bush, were incompetent, and negligent to boot? Did they have to let conservatives claim, unanswered, that Cheney and Bush were doing what was good for the country?

63. I hope they do a Berlin Food Drop for Afghanistan, "Candy Bomb" them
I hope Ive used the correct lingo. Using the military to defeat terrorism has a 93% failure rate, according to a Rand Corporation study. Police & detective work have a 42ish% success rate of ending terrorism, as does giving the groups that are terrorizing others a political representation to look after their needs. People are desperate when they're becoming terrorists, they have nothing left to live for, & are possibly driven insane; it's not exactly normal behaviour.

75. Thank you Gen. Paul Eaton!
Cheney is incompetent on many fronts. I'm glad Eaton came out and called him on it.

Two years ago it might have been risky to make such a strong statement but TIMES HAVE CHANGED! We're getting our country back, slowly, surely.
