New focus on Maine's other centrist Republican senator
Collins could be a critical crossover vote on health-care reform

By Ceci Connolly
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, October 22, 2009

BANGOR, MAINE -- A week ago, all eyes were on the senior senator from Maine, Republican Olympia J. Snowe, as she pondered the prospect of defying her party in support of a proposal to remake the nation's health-care system.

But after she voted with Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee, the what-will-Olympia-do buzz subsided, and now the junior senator from Maine is the fence-sitting Republican in President Obama's sights.

Wherever Sen. Susan Collins goes these days, people crowd around, trying to divine which way she is leaning. .........

2. I wouldn't describe her as a centrist.

Collins is even more against the public option than Snowe and doesn't even support a lame trigger. (Because Collins knows the trigger is just a delay on the public option that she is adamantly against.)

Then we have the sob story of irresponsible bus company owner Joe Cyr in the article who admits that he only covers 25% of the cost of health insurance and that's only on 15% of his employees. The remaining 85% get nothing, and he's afraid the reform will make him do the responsible thing and pay toward covering these people. This shows exactly the sort of gaps that health care reform needs to close.

4. Who gives a crap what she thinks
Neither one will ever vote for health care reform with a public option. Who are they kidding?

7. I agree with you.
They are enjoying their time in the spotlight. Especially Susan who is trying to cash in on Olympia's vote in the Committee.

6. So, 2 Maine Republicans will control the US, despite ALL the Democrats in the Oval Office,
the House of Representatives and the Senate. Who knew? I could have saved myself so much money, time and anxious moments in 2008, if only someone had given me a heads up on that fact.
