Man ran down 'too Westernized' daughter
Source: CNN

CNN) -- Arizona police are looking for a man who they allege ran down his daughter and her friend because he believed his daughter had become "too Westernized."

Police say they're looking for Faleh Hassan Almaleki, who they say struck two people with a vehicle Tuesday.

Peoria, Arizona, police said Wednesday that Faleh Hassan Almaleki, 48, struck his 20-year-old daughter, Noor Faleh Almaleki, and her friend Amal Edan Khalaf with a vehicle he was driving in a parking lot Tuesday afternoon.

Faleh Hassan Almaleki was angry with his daughter "as she had become too 'Westernized' and was not living according to traditional Iraq values," Peoria police said in a statement released Wednesday.

Noor Faleh Almaleki is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to the statement. Khalaf, 43, received injuries that are not life-threatening but is still in the hospital, police said.

1. Progress
Well at least Faleh Hassan Almaleki has moved into the 21st Century, and ran over his daughter with a car.
Before the invention of the automobile, children who became "too westernized" were trampled by horses.

<facepalm>

5. It's not limited to people from Islamic countries.
A lot of first generation immigrants go wacky when their children adapt to this country in ways they can't manage to.

A friend in high school was married off to a woman in Greece he had never met before the wedding (his parents just took him for a visit, you see) because they were afraid he'd marry a non Greek or even an Americanized Greek. It was the end of his education, too.

7. Yes, I knew 2 guys in college who were depressed about returning ot Pakistan
Their mothers/sisters would have wives waiting. The mothers/sisters scope out women for the
men to marry. They had become used to the western way and delayed returning to their country as long as possible. They explained that refusing to marry the chosen woman was not an option..they'd be kicked out of the family and, there, family is everything.

He went back for a visit and met the woman they'd picked out.

She is a knockout, university educated, and well suited. The wedding was a year ago, they're here, and pretty happy about the whole thing.

The world is a very strange place.

8. I saw alot of that growing up,
Edited on Wed Oct-21-09 05:28 PM by Sen. Walter Sobchak
I grew up in an area full of refugees from Iran and South Vietnam and went through school with their kids. The Vietnamese girls and Iranian boys seemed to assimilate practically overnight and the culture shock for the parents was enormous. The Iranians were generally secular, these were people who fled the revolution. Being in a strange new country is tough enough - it is even tougher when that strange new land comes to the kitchen table every night.

The Vietnamese parents especially freaked out as their daughters became "valley girls".

38. I saw this problem with Vietnamese immigrant families I used to work with
in a social services program.

In the traditional Vietnamese family, the father is the king of the extended family, is often 10 years older than the wife (who will control the finances, surprisingly) but in the US they can't live together in the extended family groups the way they do in Vietnam. The father loses his power and influence, and often does not take it well. A cornerstone of his identity has been removed from him.

The immigrants I worked with recognized this problem themselves.

Torn away from what he knows, his friends, his american life and forced into a culture that he has never known, into a loveless marriage? The first chance he gets, he should divorce her. It's nothing more than a loveless marriage to only please his parents.

What really happened to him anyway?

My best friend is an Indian. He dated a Jewish girl all through college. Suddenly he dumped her and proposed to another Indian girl who was the former roommate of his brother's wife. I think he realized that the family would never accept his Jewish girlfriend.

11. I've seen a number of therapy patients in the daughter's situation.
Not of being run down, but of being in extreme conflict with a parent who was raised in a different culture, immigrated, and became extremely upset that the child, who was not raised in that culture, wanted to have relationships and a place in the culture in which he or she was raised, i.e. this one. It's very hard for both sides. Ignoring for a moment the extremes like this father, the parent is genuinely disturbed and disoriented by the loss of things that make up his core identity and wants to hold onto them by keeping the family true to them. But the parent grew up with a set of supports for that identity that the child does not have, so what is being asked of the child is essentially to have no real ability to identify with anyone. It's excruciating. There's no one solution that will make both sides happy unless there's a willingness to give up something and retain something on both sides.

to become educated in these issues? So they come here knowing not only that they are about to enter an entirely new culture, but that this culture will support their children in making their own decisions and in choosing how they want to live? And that girls and women in this culture will expect to be treated equally, no matter what the cultural background of their parents?

34. I appreciate the kind words. I haven't published on this, but there's a field of study
as with many subsets of psychology. I continually study it myself as I try to help my patients and their families. The children of immigrants are very interesting and I have a great deal of compassion for the concurrent desire for a better life and the real sadness and loss of identity that comes from leaving the old one. It's hardly a new thing; that's why "Little Italy" and "Chinatown" and all those ethnocentric neighborhoods exist. It's comforting. But the kids become acculturated naturally and are very divided between the love of parents and the desire to be their own people.

Sorry; my fascination is showing. You can find more and if I do before the thread runs out I'll post some readings.

is heinous conduct for another. Corporations who send envoys or employees to countries where one's conduct is deeply invested with meaning and morals are frequently tutored extensively in right-snd-wrong. It is very interesting.

This is one of the reasons I spend a lot of time on this website. I am constantly learning something new even though I thought I already knew everything. ha ha.

It is a place to broaden and deepen one's awareness.

Kind of like being outside in the beauty of a gentle, mild night with a crescent moon descending close to the horizon with Antares below her and Jupiter off to her south. Luna is affecting my senses tonight. Always such a treat to spend time outside with the evening sky.

unless you are a psychic, who knows what was going on in the minds of these war planners except that when they invaded, the only thing they were concerned about was protecting the oil wells. they could have cared less about anything else, including the people of Iraq or even their own troops. if sowing chaos was their goal, well then I'd have to say mission accomplished!

30. Similar things have happened
Some years ago, I believe in Missouri, a similar case came to light and was profiled by 60 Minutes.

A family had immigrated to the U.S. from some middle-eastern country. The family consisted of
of a Father, wife, a pre-teen, and a little girl. Another child, I believe a girl, came later. The parents and pre-teen daughter lived according to norms back in their home country, however the young girl was sent to American schools and exposed to American culture and by the time she was in her teens she was your all-round American teenager. From what I remember, a gifted one at that, a straight "A" student with aspirations of becoming an M.D.

The parents were not thrilled with the way this daughter was turning out.

At some point in time, the teenager landed a job at a fast-food restaurant where she sometimes worked late. Most American parents would be totally thrilled with a child out earning their own money but that is NOT the way her parents saw it.

One night after working late the girl came home from work and was confronted by both parents. Accusations of prostitution, whoring, and the like were hurled at her. She denied everything.
The father then grabbed a knife and stabbed the girl to death.

The case was known in such detail for a particular reason. The FBI was keeping tabs on the father and had the whole home bugged. The whole incident was recorded on tape. The tragedy was that no agents were manning the recording machine at the time of the crime. Maybe they could have saved her.

If I remember correctly the father went to death row and the mother went to jail for life. The remaining daughter was given custody of the one infant.

I tend to remember that the parents found out the girl had been associating with a boy. Exactly what this relationship was was not clear. Some who knew both girl and the boy said they only friends and it was perfectly innocent.

One of the worst examples of culture clash I have ever heard off.

36. This is a very sad thing...
I guess now her father will become fairly educated in the American, Arizona law system. I see no reason why people can't live with some of their traditions, and still maintain a happy life, under the umbrella of freedom, but some things should be left back in the old country.. and this is a good example.

Those who move here, probably should educate themselves in what life and culture is like here. Learning to adopt is a precursor of immigration.
