Bush Medicare Pick McClellan Meets Resistance

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites)'s nominee to run the Medicare program hit resistance among senators on Tuesday over his opposition to the importation of lower-priced prescription drugs.


Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota announced he would stall the consideration of FDA (news - web sites) Commissioner Mark McClellan to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for his failure to testify on drug pricing.


McClellan on Monday promised to take a close look at whether prescription drugs can be safely imported during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee.


But his remarks failed to satisfy his critics.
