Police: New York man beaten for being gay
Source: CNN

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A man brutally beaten in New York City was targeted because he is openly gay, the New York Police Department said Monday.

Two men shouting "anti-gay remarks" viciously beat Jack Price, 49, as he left a 24-hour deli on College Point Boulevard in Queens early Friday morning, police said. No further details where available about the attack.

Price is being treated at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens, where "he is in fair condition and his vital signs are stable," said hospital spokeswoman Camela Morrissey.

Police arrested Daniel Aleman, 26, and charged him with assault and aggravated assault as a hate crime.

IMO all the people out there who spout anti-gay propaganda are partly responsible for this.

1. Ah. It was in Queens.
There are people in Queens who never go to Manhattan.

9. There are more people in Manhattan who never come into Queens
May I also remind you that it was the Queens St Patrick's Day Parade that first let gays and lesbians march? Don't give this Queens native your bullshit about how superior Manhattanites are.

24. So did I
So do we enter some kind of pissing contest, or do you maybe acknowledge that there are intelligent people in our home borough? This beating could have happened in any of the five boroughs, and Queens does not have a monopoly on bigotry.

29. So did I, and we all then know that College Point is considered backwards even by Queens standards

:-)

I say this having lived in College Point for two years when my family hit hard times - 4th and 5th grade at PS29. It was, in the eighties, a lower middle class white enclave, where many of the older folks still spoke German (it had been settled by German immigrants). There were four ways in and out - an anomaly in New York City: College Point Boulevard, Linden Place, 20th Avenue, and 14th Avenue. So it was essentially an isolated town in the midst of Queens. College Point might as well be a medium sized town in rural Pennsylvania.

Now the quarter mile of 20th Avenue that separates Whitestone from College Point is lined with big box stores; it used to be an abandoned field flanked by the defunct Flushing Airport and bronwfields between Parsons Boulevard and the early 20th century factory district that welcomed the rare visitor to the little burgh. The old, brokedown amusement park and video arcade that used to make up the Western border of CP are long gone, too, replaced by a shiny, stadium seat movie theater and more big boxes that sit on the east side of the Whitestone expressway like a warning.

College Point then was, to put it mildly, a shithole. I'm not sure all that much has changed, despite appearances.

22. queens is where the native newyorkers live
Edited on Tue Oct-13-09 03:53 PM by mitchtv
manhattan is full of the other kind of newyorkers. I love both. Queens is great for eating, now that it is more cosmopolitan. when I grew up it was all Irish, Italian, and Jewish., by a wide margin. Now there are more languages spoken in Elmhurst than anywhere in the world. When I used to pass College PT on the bus to school, it was all churches and bars, a record number of both.

Earlier today read an article that listed him in "critical, but stable condition". Glad to hear he's improving.

I hope they throw the book at those two nazi fucks.

Sometimes, just sometimes I really have to wonder if people are actually serious about that shit.

13. Buying food while gay. America must have equal rights under the law for ALL/
The bigotry must not be enshrined in our laws. It feeds the higotry on the streets.

Aggravated assault? Sounds like attempted murder.

you are claiming that the World's No 1 channel isn't "We report, You Decide"? Are you claiming that their motto of "fair & balanced" is incorrect? :sarcasm:

I am sure that ALL Repub legislators saw the event in their palantir and it was not a hate crime but a minor robbery. Or at least that's what they will claim on national television. :sarcasm:

On a more serious note, Republicans have proved themselves to be poor students of history, lacking in humility and resistant to learning. How else have they learnt NOTHING from civil rights movement?

Is there any reason to doubt that Lincoln would have been democrat if he was born today? Also, if Limbaugh/Beck were around during the Civil War, do you doubt that they wouldn't have criticized Lincoln? Doesn't it send a clear message to their devotees/followers/listeners?

21. Mad props for using the word "palantir" in political discourse!
:bounce:

for the uninitiated, it was one of seven stones used by the elite of Middle-earth to see across distance and often time. They were basically "crystal balls".

30. And yet when they happen in certain places
they condemn the entire culture and everyone living there.

When they happen in other places, they are completely isolated events.

Replace New York with atlanta and you'd have gotten a radically different response on this thread.

25. If there's one thing the south is known for
it's being soft on crime.

Like those murderers in jasper Tx, they were simply let go after dragging a man to death (they were white, he was black, so the jury figured it was self defense).

Well, ok, technically they were put to death, but I mean, you could tell people wanted to let them go. Of couse, opinion polls didn't bear that out, but you know, it's true anyway.

28. That kind of thing happens everywhere
let's see what happens to these two thugs in New York.

But are you making the claim that southern juries are hard on hate crimes against blacks, but forgiving on hate crimes against gays? You're mixing up your stereotypes.
