Ross Perot to receive Thayer Award
Source: midhudsonnews

As a Texas native, Eagle Scout, service member, public servant and philanthropist, Perot has served his country in many immeasurable ways.

Perot, a 1953 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, is an extraordinary business leader and two-time presidential candidate. He has donated both personal time and financial support to numerous organizations. Of particular interest and commitment is his assistance to service members and their families.

The Thayer Award, established in honor of Col. Sylvanus Thayer, “Father of the Military Academy,” is presented to an outstanding citizen whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify the Military Academy motto, “Duty, Honor, Country.” The Association of Graduates has presented the award annually since 1958.

Past recipients of the Thayer Award include Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, Bob Hope, Neil Armstrong, George Bush, Barbara Jordon, Walter Cronkite, Tom Brokaw, Colin Powell and Henry Kissinger. Last year’s recipient was former Secretary of Defense William Perry.

2. I found out some incredible things about Perot
Back in 1992 I joined a local research team made up of about equal parts, Democrats, Republicans and Independents. We all read extensively about the issues and people in politics during that time and shared that information with each other.

I read two books that were very informative. One was "Kiss the Boys Goodbye" by Monica and William Stevenson. In that book, the authors detailed Perot's history as a member of Reagan's Foreign Intellegence Advisory Panel. Perot was trying to find out if any American servicemen had been left alive as POW's in Vietnam. He found extensive secret records regarding the CIA's involvement in drug smuggling. When Perot brought that information back to the Panel, George Bush Sr. who was a member of the panel, had Perot kicked off of the panel and threatened Perot with Treason if he revealed what he had learned.

This information dove-tails with what you learn when you investigate the life of Adm. Stockdale, Perot's VP choice. Stockdale was a true American hero and an eyewitness to the Gulf of Tonkin HOAX. His story also leads to Air America, the CIA front for drug smuggling, the the POW/MIA issue and other related information.

Take the time to learn more about the information contained in, "Kiss the Boys Goodbye" and also Stockdale's book, "In Love and War".

6. He never forgot his roots, either
He's given millions to support the arts and education in the town he grew up in. If I had to guess, I'd say that he gives a lot more to charity than most eccentric billionaires do.

And for what it's worth, I grew up one block from Perot, just fifty years later. Last time I was in town, I noticed his boyhood home had a satellite dish attached. Legend has it that when he hit it big with TI, he purchased his childhood home, didn't like the paint that later owners had put on it, and the paint couldn't be removed without damaging the building. He had every brick individually removed, turned around,a nd reinserted so the unpainted side now faces outward, which is why the satellite dish seems so incongruous (maybe the caretakers like MSNBC, though).

8. Perot also gave to the Salvation Army each year
Each year, Perot would find out how much money the Salvation Army needed for their upcoming budget year, and he would give the ENTIRE amount, usually in the millions. He did this without fanfare, and intentionally kept his charitable giving very low key.
