Jury finds Astor's son guilty of looting estate
Source: AP

Brooke Astor's 85-year-old son has been convicted of plundering the philanthropist's nearly $200 million fortune.

Anthony Marshall now faces a mandatory jail sentence of at least one year for exploiting Astor's failing mind to help himself to her money.

The jury found him guilty of two serious counts, first-degree grand larceny and scheming to defraud, but acquitted him on some others. The jury also convicted estate lawyer Francis X. Morrissey Jr., 66, of scheming to defraud Astor.

1. Did the Estate pay out the money to him already or was it being held in trust by a Receiver?

2. He used the funds before she died, so I don't know that "estate"
comes into play.

This has been for several years now and she died just recently.

9. Money can't always protect you from evil as you grow weak..
it was her son's own son (her grandson, who I don't think had any financial interest in her will) who actually went to court to have his father removed as her guardian, because he was spending as little money as possible to take care of her and her condition was worsening as a result. That preceded the financial defalcation trial. It's good she wasn't lucid and then alive (d. 2007) to see what he'd come to. I guess he thought he'd live to 125 to enjoy her money!

She was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her philanthropic efforts by Bill Clinton in 1998.
