34. I agree
We ought not play this up very much. I am currently unemployed, but am surviving. I hope that these 500,000 can find something very soon. Good luck.

17. Your assuming that none of the previously unemployed were hired
Edited on Thu Oct-08-09 09:35 AM by karynnj
A real question - that I don't know the answer to - is what do the employment numbers look like. A key turning point will be when the number hired in a month exceeds the number who lose a job in that month. Even after that point, it will take a long time before the total unemployment numbers return to "normal". (The fact is that it will never reach zero. There always are people changing jobs - the difference is the expected time before they are likely to find a new one.

(Now the Census bureau is really on top of it - their 9/30/2009 report contains the net gain/loss numbers for 2007Q4 to 2008Q4 (with some states not included). Yes - that is about 9 months old! http://lehd.did.census.gov/led/

12. It could be worse.
If it weren't for President Obama and his leadership and policies, the job losses would be MUCH worse. He inherited this mess and he's fixing it.

I have confidence in our President.

21. This isn't net job losses.... it doesn't count people who were hired

Even in the boomiest of boom times, this number is usually greater than 250,000.

It means that 521,000 people filed for unemployment for the first time last week. But we don't know how many people were hired during that same time from this number.

If it was greater than 521,000, then we had positive net job growth. If it was less, then we had negative.

But it doesn't mean that there are 521,000 less employed people than last week.

23. Don't know... they only report the number monthly... but....

In September, it was -260,000.

For reference sake... in March it was -750,000.

It is moving in the right direction. Not all the way there yet, but getting closer.

25. No.. I'm more worried about the trajectory
If the number is decreasing, we're moving in the right direction.

It's not going to go from -750,000 to positive in a month or two. Takes some time.

It's moving in the right direction.

Your failure to acknowledge that shows that it is you who are more interested in spin. Specifically, any spin that can make it look like Obama's failing.

News flash: Rome wasn't built in a day. And I'll STILL take Obama over any Republican and most Dems.
