Women should vote … as instructed: Karzai

Afghan president says men should let women vote, but tell them who to vote for

Move is an attempt at compromise

KABUL (CP) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai offered Afghan men a trade today in an attempt to convince them to let their women vote in upcoming elections.

"Please, my dear brothers, let your wives and sisters go to the voter registration process," Karzai told a gathering to mark International Women's Day. "Later, you can control who she votes for, but please, let her go."

Karzai's plea set off a murmur in the crowd of about 500 women and illustrated the fragile grip the democratic process holds in Afghanistan.

"Now that is a bad idea," said Simi Nakbari, a teacher and mother whose husband reluctantly allowed her to attend the meeting.

"It doesn't seem like a very good interpretation of the rights we are working for. We can select which minister or warlord to vote for as well as anyone."

34. Ah yes, remember this?
"Those of us who were working against the war in the months before it began often felt ourselves laboring under Cassandra's curse. Apart from attacking the rationale, our major strategy was to remind people that war is always bad news. And in the months before the war, people didn't want to hear that. It was easier to believe in the prophecies coming out of Washington of a quick, painless victory followed by the warm welcome of a grateful populace and a swift transition to a democratic government that would be friendly to US interests. Many of us often wondered what was the matter with us that we couldn't sit back, relax, and accept that story, instead of being driven to tell the one we thought was true. We didn't, after all, appear to be changing anything. "

refuse to be part of the viscious cabaret dished up to the western middle classes to make them feel better about the thousands of civilians that died for oil.

Afgan women are really going to feel nostalgic about Soviet rule by the time the West is done with them...

5. Karzai is irrelevant even in Afghanistan (Time article)
Edited on Mon Mar-08-04 02:43 PM by underpants
http://www.time.com/time/covers/1101040308/story.html

Hamid Karzai is lonely. He is huddled, as always, deep inside his presidential palace in Kabul, protected by towering stone walls, growling dogs and U.S. bodyguards. Visitors to the palace must undergo three separate body searches before passing through the arched gates, all under the gaze of trained marksmen standing sentry in a watchtower.

Later on the article an un-named special forces soldier says he would give KArzai two or three days to live if the US pulled out. He only "rules" his bunker.

14. Taliban? Michael Savage?
I believe Savage said the when women get in a voting booth they get a rush of estrogen and end up voting for liberals, something like that.

Thank god for the women of Afghanistan they have Karzai "in charge" (see post above) and not the Taliban.

thats a grand equalizer.
Besides, Ive been screaming about womens rights there LONGGGGGGGGGGG before the whores in the White House ever mnetioned it, those morons.
There are a few right wing extremist religious groups here that actually think women should lose the right to vote, or vote what their husbands want them to
Fat chance!

13. I have never objected to the killing of any Afghani man.
Except that it obviously doesn't work.

When men speak of the "good old days," they always mean when women were owned.

There are no "good old days" for women. Stone age Afghanistan being a case in point.

A man who is afraid of a woman's vote, has much to fear from God.

30. Is this what the new Iraqi Council will say to the Iraqi men?
Didn't someone shoot and kill the only woman who was on the Council last fall?

I suppose this is the real plan according to PNAC. Push women back to the home, say at least they get to vote (even if "told" who to vote for), and claim America, the Great Savior of the World has once again brought democracy and women's rights to the Arab world.

Meanwhile, how's your Road Map going in the ME YOU FRIKING MORANS!

when Archie can't vote and expects Edith to vote his way instead. Hmmm didn't work that way as I remember. At least the women will get in the booth and hopefully they can decide. Well, if they are able to know whom they are voting for and don't have to tell the guys afterwards.

It's a start. :)

40. Afghanistan = Freeperville?
Ya know, this is the kind of stuff that would be cheered by "America's Cavemen" a/k/a "Free" Republic. I'm sure that many Freepers would love to be able to control the votes of their wives like their like-minded conservatives in Afghanistan do. They all seem to hate that women often cast deciding votes for the Democratic politicians. Freepers yearn for the "good ol' days" -- women stayed in the kitchen and did as they're told and affirmative action was for white men.
